Last fall I removed 2 trees from my back yard. The stumps and roots have been fairly well removed and I want to plant a shrub in the location of each old tree--A 'Blue Maid' Holly in one spot and a Lilac bush in the other. My question is: Should I add compost to rehab the soil in each spot due the possibility that their previous inhabitants might have sucked out a lot of the nutrients in the soil?
Amend Soil or No?
I would. It certainly wouldn't hurt. Dig it in a bit if you can. I always try and add a bit of osmocote slow release fertilizer when planting a new tree or shrub to give it a good go along with new organic soil and work it in. Loosening up the soil also allows water and oxygen to get to the roots easily.
Definitly enhance the soil prior to planting something new where a tree has been pulled.
I ended up working several bags of Coast of Maine compost in each site. I think it should be pretty good now.
