I got these cuttings and rooted them in water. On 03-01-10 I planted them in soil. I now have new leaves coming out. When do I replant them into a more permanent pot?
Thanks, Elizabeth
When to replant Algerian Ivy cuttings?
Wehn they are large enough, have a root system and a few leaves...are you starting them inside or outside?
If you keep you eye on them...yes. I lose things mainly when I am not paying attention. ☺
I either love them to death or just plain forget about them and they die:( I've really paid attention to these. I got them in the mail on Feb. 27th. I rooted them in water and when the roots looked long enough I planted them. This was my first time doing this.
should I keep them moist or let the soil dry out?
Thanks for everything, Elizabeth
Here's a picture from when I first planted them. I now have 5 new leaves.
Not dried out completely...if you can watch them, water thoroughly, when slightly wilted.
I'm sorry...that may not be accurate, as the ivy leaves are rather stiff, so just water when almost dry, but not thoroughly dry...does that make any sense?
evelyn- Not really. How do I know when it's almost dry? Should I stick my finger into the soil? And if so, how far down? Will they go through a "shock" since I replanted them and if so, what do I look for?
Thanks!
I know Alg. Ivy likes water, more than other varieties. If you keep them watered or put some gel crystals down there so they do not dry out all the way, they should be fine. If even one survives, they root easily if it is not too hot, if you just take a leaf and shove it in the ground. Don't panic, it will be fine, just water them. They are drought tolerant to a degree when established, but not now. If they don't make it, just find some one with plants and pluck some leaves in a moistish area and wait, just like vinca Major, I had a bed with both and the whole bed was under a Weeping Willow and it was all covered in a giant bank of vinca and A Ivy in a year or so. I got most from a flat of A Ivy and about 3 cuttings from vinca M.
I had a variegated ivy and planted in the front garden two yrs ago. It has just sat there and done nothing for two years. I went out yesterday to clean up because the landscape people are not allowed in that area and it has taken off like a weed. Must be the 3rd year thing. I will send photo some time this week.
Another thing, I have been trying to gets starts of several other vines with no avail. I was in the back landscape and they had rooted themselves. LOL. I will send photos of that also, just before I transplant.
I have some plants that layered themselves too and they have roots in the middle of a branch. Ivy does that too.
Hellnzn11- Are gel crystals the same as moisture crystals? I did mix some moisture crystals in with the soil.
So far it is doing ok. It's been almost 2 weeks since I transplanted them. I haven't noticed any leaves dying or anything. I guess that's good. The new leaves that had started are still green.
I hope they do OK. I have several "Marble Queen" ivies, even some in a vase of water( has been for almost 2 years), but this is my first Algerian Ivy plant.
Thanks for all the advice, Elizabeth
pic after 3 days plants
Same thing. It looks fine. Sometimes my Algerian ivy, leaves dry up a little and it comes back, same as my little plugs of Virginia Creeper, they look dead and leafless and all of a sudden they wake up.
Did you combine them into one pot????? It looks like a different plant than the first pix. If not, it is larger.
Yeah I put them all in the same pot. It's the same one in each picture. It does look bigger to me, plus the new leaves are getting bigger.
I'm thinking it's going to be just fine:)
You would know by now unless it was summer time, then it would fade little by little. So now you can find a new one to root. If you are looking for screening plants. Easy to root, try the Virginia Creeper too. EZ. pretty in fall.
what in the world are screening plants? I'll have to try and find a Virginia Creeper, I'm all about easy!LOL
Screening plants grow, up and out to screen out a view, they can be anything from a group of tall shrubs etc. That equal a live fence. V. Creeper looks like a marijuana leaf sort of, but in a vine or ground cover, with the grape like tendrals that grab and cling on to fence materials, it is in the same family as Boston Ivy.
I agree.
Good! Thanks, Elizabeth
