Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Not going to the Extreme Bulls today, cant leave the house... Have two more pipping that I can see so nope not leaving the farm today... Well actually we can just call this the Chicken Ranch... we have working chickens, teenage chickens and baby chickens... WE HAVE CHICKENS...

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

Whipee!!! Babies!!

Richmond, TX

Sounds like you have all the excitement you need right at home. Congrats on the hatch!

Ferndale, WA

What a wonderful thing to wake up to. I bet Billy is just having a blast. What a great education that boy is getting on that chicken ranch. Ms Jester I think you have really gotten the hatching bug...LOL

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

LOL we have 6 chicks, 5 black and one a beautiful grey. Still have 10 eggs in the bator, we will see what happens... I will be moving them tomorrow morning into the baby room... I love the grey chicken, when I go up and check and talk to them she or he raises the head to look at me... I am so loving this.. Billy is having a blast, and is waiting patiently to see his new chicks he says he cant see thru the window, but he keeps trying...
So instead of looking in there every 5 minutes, we went outside, drove T post's in for his horse pen and his garden, fenced in the garden so nothing can eat his veggies and will plant watermelon and cantaloupe as soon as he wakes up.Maybe some onions and a squash plant in his garden so he wont eat all mine. Its been a good day.

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 8b)

sounds like a wonderful day.

(Zone 6b)

When my babies came from Ideal, I had two red ones that would look at me right in the eye. None of the rest seemed to give two hoots for me, they just went about their chickie businees. I named one of them Tesla, because he was the inventor, and smart. lol To this day Tesla will come and jump up into my lap. In fact, I have three now, that do that, one of the white ones decided she likes me too.

I suppose some chickens just like people. With them, it was there when they were two or three days old. So you watch that little gray one. :) He/she likes you.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I see two more eggs that have pips, but that is all I can see since the bator is full of broken shells and active chicks... Cant wait till 5am tomorrow when I move them into the tank and can finally see them all... Billy wants to name another one Wren2, He loves his Wren1 and thinks they should all have that top hat... Next year we will have to get more polish..

BTW it is killing me not to open the bator and getting the broken egg shells out so there is more room, but I really know better..

You're a good mother hen, Miss J.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

thanks Porkpal, I have to resist the urge to jump everytime they start moving around... they sure are fussing now.

(Zone 6b)

I wish we could all see.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

OK I want all to know NOTHING ever comes before my coffee first thing in the morning.. Well this morning that is not the case. 8 lovely little ones did... 5 black ones like peanut, 1 grey one that hatched first and my 2 bantys creme with black stripes (they both hatched whoooo hooooo) Pictures will follow when I get to work. They are in the baby room, took a few light bulbs to get it right, a 100 watt was too hot, made them flatten out as did the red one, the 40 watt made them try and do the dog pile, finally took the 60 watt reptile bulb that looks like it will work, still working with that. They have all ate or attempted to, at least one has found water, maybe more when my back was turned... They are happy, eating, moving, chirping, falling asleep, and doing it all over again... They will outgrow the small tank in no time... Cant wait to see what Billy thinks...
As for the rest of the eggs, I poured hot water in the bator, did not have the top off for long, in case the there was more, and the RH only dropped to 61 percent, but its back up to 77...There is one egg I can see with a pip, but it was the same one I saw last night before I went to sleep, will see when I get home...

Such cute babies! I rather like the grey on too. What is the possible parentage?

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

Awww they are soo cute! I love the gray one! My guess is roo on that one..:) The bantams are darling too.. Partridge strips are so cute! Love the beige color..

(Zone 5b)

Congrats on your hatch, what cuties they are. Billy is so lucky to have you and all the great experiences and memories.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I DID NOT GIVE UP ON THE ONE PIPPED EGG...and was rewarded with another chick in the bator when we got home today. OH I am sooo happy. So I quickly scooped it out of the bater, it was dry and popped it in with the others. Th RH is still at 71 and although I dont see anymore pips in the remaining eggs, I wont give up until tomorrow afternoon on the rest of the eggs....

Father is Haystack, the is my only Rooster, mother is anyone of the girls, I am wondering if the Grey one is out of Miss C (Named after CMoxon) she does have alot of grey. There is another one that has more grey streaks then the rest of them, but not totally grey. Some of them have grey butts, they are all so cute... All my Hens and Haystack are pictured on The Billy's Barn Yard thread.

The banty's were given to me to throw in the bator and he said we can keep them, although he is not sure what breed, he thinks Irish or something, which I can find no breed of bantys like that.
It has been most wonderful experience that Billy and I have shared...

Billy has a few words to say about his baby's..

Dear everybody,
I got new baby chickens..See (as he points to the tank) cause I am a cowboy and got golf balls from the Easter bunny, thanks for giving me the chickens, you can come play with them if you want when Nanny lets me hold them. Let me count inside there we have 9 chickens in there. Ok got to go play golf balls...
Love Billy Bob

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

Thanks for the invite Billy. Congratulations on your new chicks. Have fun playing golf balls. I like to play golf balls too. Hug old Chief for me.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I forgot to ask, How do I clean the bator after this hatch?? It is really smelly and I want it clean before my next hatch...LOL

(Zone 6b)

The Haystack name lives on.

Portland, OR(Zone 8b)

Hi Billy, I am happy you have new chicks. They are cute. Have fun with your golf balls. Have a happy day!

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

I clean with bleach and air dry it in the sun if I can... Catsy doesn't use bleach, but I do. :) I don't know what others use..

Lodi, United States

I don't use bleach because I heard it breaks down styrofoam. Probably okay if very dilute. I use dilute disinfectant, those Mr Clean white scrubby things and then put the incubator, open, in the sun to dry.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

I have one of them Mr Clean scrubby things, I am just afraid if I put it outside, it would blow away or get carried away by a critter...

Lodi, United States

It doesn't have to stay out long...but the sun is a really great disinfectant.

Oh, one thing. Chickens LOVE styrofoam. They will peck your incubator to pieces if they get the chance.

And, no, styrofoam won't poison them. There are other types of rigid foam that are toxic, but not styrofoam.

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I clean mine with antibacterial dish soap and put it in the sun to dry.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Ok then I will hurry home clean it when I get home it can sit out for a few hours where I can keep an eye on it... Had to take out the bowl cause they were drinking it too fast, it was too small, got a pretty Green Waterer in there now..

Grapefruit Seed Extract - Non Toxic Cleaner

Grapefruit seed extract is a great nontoxic spray or wash for the cleaning of all pet areas, cages and bedding, etc. to provide a germ free environment. It can be mixed by the quart or gallon size if necessary and sprayed onto large areas with any type spraying device. There is no need to rinse it off as grapefruit seed extract is biodegradable and nontoxic. Grapefruit seed extract is also very economical at 10-15 drops per gallon.
------------------------------------------
Found this today while searching for the reason my new hen is sneezing, and thought of you and your incubator. Apparently grapefruit seed extract is a cure all for all kinds of things, including being a disinfectant, and even killing lice and fleas.

I have some, so I put it in her water. Not sure what to do really. I sure don't want some disease spreading to my other chickens. She is eating, so I take that as a good sign. I know she had been in an unhealthy environment with some pigeons and other chickens.

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Cool I will look into it. Bator is cleaned and waiting for next load...LOL

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

You are hooked!!

I have 2 dozen bantam eggs in my bator now.
