gray with dark trim caterpillar

Winnie, TX

in about three NIGHTS some critters defoliated a hickory tree. it had new leaves and had blommed about the size of a rats ear. solid green. i saw the start on one limb but no bugs. the third day following it was competely stripped. i had gone out the night but could see no bugs. a couple of days later under one of my live oaks also stripped i found two caterpillars. under a peice of shingle i put ther to see if something would hide there. one hickory,5 live oaks and two chinese chestnuts denuded in just a few nights. no webs but the leaf carcasses left show chew marks like web worms. one county agent is studying about it. another just brushed it off saying caterpillars do that and the leaves will grow back. the hickory is 20' tall and bloomed (tassels) for the first time. i was hoping for nuts but i don't know now. so sudden an attack and could only find two bugs. anyone know what hit me??? if so PLEASE e-mail me -sealfleetch@yahoo.com and tell me.
