Where did you buy them Tish?
I'm excited for ya, I want pics !
bat flower
I bought them off ebay. hoping they are nice ones. not real big plants (they are seedlings) so will have to grow them. But that's fine. what's the fun in having a full grown plants. Just hope I don't kill them with the babying I might do, i'll try not too.
I'll still try the seeds. Can't resist a challenge. Lol
I have some seeds I got tired of messing with so I threw them in the same pot as a bat... We'll see :)
Got my two bat flowers in the mail yesterday. Actually they are small but decent plants. I have a question for you all. Do they like direct sun, full sun, part, or shade. the tag they sent said full sun but I thought I read somewhere they liked shade? Trying not to baby them too much but would like some instructions on how to take care of it. They didn't send anything that helped me in the way of keeping it as a housplant.
I have mine in a variety of conditions. Of the ones outdoors, one is planted in the sun, it gets probably 8-9 hours sun a day. The other is in dappled shade under an oak tree, it may get an hour of direct sun a day if its lucky. Both do equally well.
The black bats, green bats and white bats I have in the greenhouse are all in full 'greenhouse' sun, which is probably 85% light transmission through the glazing. This is my one under the tree
I'm gonna have to get one, If it's hardy for goth it will be hardy for me. ............gonna go check my piggy bank. I really want a tuberorse "the Pearl" too! so gotta pick !
Okay I have it in a bright window, hoping this will work. :o)
I think that more than anything, the key to success with Tacca indoors is humidity. We've kinda proven that they can tolerate a very wide range of temperature and light. But humidity is something that they absolutely seem to require, as well as good air movement. If you can, I would mist the plant frequently, just keep a spray bottle of water there and every time you walk by give it a shot. Maybe run a fan in that room, and in winter, definitely keep it AWAY from any dry hot air blowing on it from a heating unit or vent.
If you have a well lit bathroom *which no one really does :)* That would be a perfect place for tacca in the winter, hot showers = extra warm steam :) That even sounds good to me right about now!
Your house doesn't carry the 80% humidity like they like, if it did it would be mold infested, but try to keep the humidity as high as you can without ruining your walls.
My tacca, I had in a room with a humidifier, it was always on, I didn't care, I just wanted my plant happy! Let me tell you, it was practically raining in that room, it was crazy, eventually I decided to stop acting a fool and move him to a bathroom that is well lit, he did great all winter!
