Am I too late?

Springfield, IL(Zone 6a)

Since I've been swamped lately (I just finished my Master Gardener classes, yeah!!), I haven't gotten my seeds planted in my indoor greenhouse. This is really my first year starting seeds indoors, so I need some advice. Am I WAY too late? I don't mind it if I'm a little late but if you all have any thoughts or advice, please let me know. I do have a couple of heat mats and everything will be under light in my little greenhouse (one of those 4-shelf things that stands upright and you zip open and shut.) Please give me your thoughts and advice... Thanks!

SusieR, You are too late for some things, but there are still many things that could benefit from getting a little bit of a head start indoors. I am still starting a few things inside even though our last frost date is nearing (probably tonight looking at the forecast). As for the heat mats, that also depends on what you are germinating and how warm it is where your greenhouse is positioned.

Why don't you post a list of what you would like to start and we can comment on the appropriateness of starting each of them indoor at this time of year.

Whatever you do this year, keep a journel.Take notes. You will have a reference for next year. Its only a mistake if you repeat it year after year.Notes should include. When planted, when germinated, when planted out, when fertilized, when bloomed, when peaked, where planted or anything else you want to remember.Edge

I agree! I think I'm just feeling pressured because I'm behind on everything. I always end up buying some plants later in the season, so why can't I plant some late flower seeds? No worries!

You can do and try anything you want.I have no plans to come to Springfield and stop you.Just don't get caught by the flower police.LOL,Edge

I would also remind you to look at the calendar and try to ignore the weather we've been having the last two weeks. It is still very early in IL yet and it is only the middle of April (even if it does feel like June). We still have a very good chance of a frost and some very ugly weather. I keep wanting to start planting warm season crops in the garden and then I remind myself that if I do there is a very good chance they will be killed by a late frost. I have also resisted planting out annuals and filling my pots for at least another two weeks.

Good call! I've had the top down and have been basking in the sun and I think that's one reason why I feel behind. It's supposed to rain on Friday and then we're supposed to get some more reasonable temps (60's instead of these mid to high 80's!) Thanks!

For years I direct sowed seed on 5/1.Then one year it was really cold.I lost almost all of my seed due to rotting.Lesson learned. Now seed is planted 5/30.Last frost date for me is 5/15.You can't rush mother nature and she won't make me breakfast either.Edge
