I've found numerous rodent holes in my lawn and beds. I do mean numerous! I think they have either eaten the roots or just up-rooted ALL save one of my Japanese and Siberian Iris's!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've found very small pieces of rhizomes that im hoping to save, but not sure it's possible......time will tell.
So, what made it for you? And what didn't?
Possibly lost :
'Sugar and Butter'
'Gracieuse'
'Silver Edge'
'Light at Dawn'
and these..... :(
Spring is here.....what made it, what didn't?
I am sorry to hear about the s. iris. Hopefully you can save enough to get them started again. One year the little buggers ate several hosta here.
So far I think I have lost two delphs, penstamon 'Violet Dusk unless it is really slow to sprout,' a 'Ruby Giant' echinacea and maybe one gaillardia O&L. I did not notice any tunnels this year but we have been having regular visits from neighborhood cats so that may explain the vole and field mice decline. Also the hawk keeps them in check too.
I think I lost a few echies too........only see 3 out of 7 so far. I'm sure there are more plant missing, i'll need to take stock of them all evetually. But I was really upset about those iris's.....some i've had for 3, 5, and 7+ years.
DH just informed me one of my rose's 'Graham Thomas' didn't make it and the other is barely holding on. :(
Oh not good news. Wait a bit on the echies, they may pop eventually. All the crazy weather this winter no doubt will take a toll for all of us. As a side note anyone with lilies up even an inch or two might want to check for red lily leaf beetles today. This warm weather is bringing them out of the soil. Knocked off about a dozen this am already.
Ugh, already?? Off to check for the red devils!
Bummer, Celeste.
I'm still evaluating. I did lose a JM I planted out in full sun last spring - way too quickly. It dropped all its leaves right away but I was hoping for a miracle. Not to be. On a poisitive note, all the other JM's planted last year seem to be doing well.
Jury's still out,
- A Virginia Sweetspire doesn't look too good, looks like severe windburn, ~30% chance it'll come back...
- New Oakleaf hydrangea planted last fall saying nothing yet, but then so are my other established hybiscus so we'll see...
- Wine & roses Wiegelia looks windburn too, but it's a well established plant so I have high hopes, still dormant.
- Scotch broom suffered some discoloration due to windburn & being plastered under 2' of snow, but it's standing tall & I expect blooms this year.
- Surprised to see a Coneflower come back, (a first for me), where there's one, there's going to be more that's for sure! lol!.
- and my crazy Crimson & Gold flowering quince has been putting out flowers ever since the dwarf Iris came up! lol!
I lost a few DL's...either that or they are still in dormancy (atleast that is what I keep telling myself). I think, not 100% sure, that my one Mock Orange (it's the double white) might be on it's way out...not sure if it's a location thing (very much in full sun) or a neighborly thing.
Jap. Iris...I think there are 3-4 coming back, out of 12 I planted between 2 years ago and last summer. I know I'm talking apples and oranges here, but every single one of of german beardeds, especially the ones I got from the Kasperek's (Zebra Garden Iris) are coming up...everyone of them :-)
Hosta...there is only one that I'm concerned about, I'm hoping it's a late starter...all of my other hosta are up and leafing out, this one...it's just there...'Rhino Hide' is the name of it.
Roses...the 4 roses that I purchased from Chamblee's are coming up like crazy, they are almost completely and totally leafed out, and I think I may be seeing flower bud swells (in APRIL!) the other 5 roses that I have, all from J&P...1 was a goner for sure, the other 4 are looking ragged as all heck...so, from my own wee little observation about own root roses versus grafted...I'm going with own root from now on. The 3 Knock Out roses are almost all leafed out as well.
Every single peony that I planted...is up and coming...I my actually see blooms on the 3 'Bartzellas' that I got for a really great price 2 years ago-they were on sale for $7 a piece in 1 gallon pots when I got them.
Every Echi that I planted...every single blasted one of them, NADA. Maybe it's to early...not 100% sure, but...I'm not going to hold my breath on any of them.
Lost a couple small irises but the rest are fine so far, haven't checked all the beds. DH pruned the Eng. roses for me today, too wet to do it in March. Pat austin which is on its own roots looked fine. Pegasus not as happy. Small 'rock garden peony' is there but very slow to grow. Peonies from my house in WI are fine, have been here over 30 yrs. Will remember to have DH check for lily beetles.
Newer echies, Thom?? That's my problem with the recent ones - they suck!
'Bartzella' has not emerged yet, it better for what it cost me...wasn't as lucky as Thom. :(
So far, most DL's seem to be fine...haven't taken stock of all as of yet.
Lost one magnolia tree too I think.
Now on a postivie note, all of the poppies Allison gave me have survived!!
One of the plants Bill gave me at louise's last year has made it fine. Now i need to know if I should prune it or not? Yew-hoooo, Bill? Yellow flowering bush, can't read the tag.....do you remember the name??
Still a bit early to tell for me, but I know the few crocus bulbs I plants got pulled up as soon as they started blooming. I expected this which is why I only planted a few. For some reason the critters stay in the back, so all the ones up front are fine (whew).
There's one pasque flower that gets trampled on all year because it is so close to the bird feeders and I think it has finally kicked the bucket.
I have a million vole holes in my big experimental bed (experimental because of them!), so only time will tell what will come up. Though the siberian iris for me have done just fine, pixie.
WaterCan - 7a?? Man, I feel so far up north now! 3 whole zones...I don't even want to think of what you can grow! Well Victor is 6b, but somehow 7 seems like a whole different league :)
All my Echinaceas came back including all the new ones. Funny for me - all the new ones including late planted plugs from last season broke dormancy first, The last to broke dormancy with all the warm weather were the matured Echinaceas.
All other perennials are back in full force. Salvias are growing fast, as well as day lilies, asters, and yarrows..Lilies with their babies are popping out of the ground. Roses and hydrangeas (except pee gee tree) don't look bare anymore. Bleeding hearts are flowering, much ahead of the tulips. I still have spring bulbs trying to poke out of the ground.
Even a clematis I rescued from Lowe's last season for 25 cents (died late in the season and thought was gone for good) is vigorously growing.
The only thing I'm concerned of are the homestead purple verbenas which are supposed to be perennial in my zone. They were evergreen until about December then they were all covered with all the snow Jan and Feb (which I thought would help insulate). Now they look dead. I dug up a couple, the roots were healthy and looks like new roots were growing. So maybe I'll give it a couple more weeks.
Yep Victor, all of the Saul Echi varieties, Sundown, Sunup...all of those types, dead...or again, they haven't broken dormancy.
Everything else is growing like mad. I found out that one of the pretty flowers I have (can't think of the name off the top of my head) readily and heavily self sows...EVERYWHERE...holy (insert expletive). I think they are called fairy bells, or angel bells...small purplish/blue flowers...they remind me of baby Aconitum...everywhere. I have a mass of hosta seedlings in one bed also...lol.
For the first time ever I have foxgloves coming up all over the place, but I'm happy about that. Delphiniums...Some people have great luck with them, I'm going to treat them like an annual.
I have no luck with delphs returning.
Not long lived here either, I think the longest delph lived 3 years.
I'd forgotten all about my quince until I read WC post!! Jeez, hope thats not lost too....don't remember seeing any green on it yet.
Thom I have the double white mock orange too and it has done nothing but struggle here for the last 3 years. This winter I think it bit the big one. On a positive note, I have an old fashioned Mock Orange that is about 40+ years old and 12-15' tall approx. 10' around. Let me know if you want a piece. ^_^
celeste it is a japanese kerria bush with double yellow blooms - did you get a weigela too?
i lost one new bearded iris planted in the fall - who knows which one - still looking for a couple of coop echi's although i "think" there might be growth or weeds? everything else is up and going as far as i can tell. most important is all the jm's are leafing out even the couple i put back in sick bay.
wait a weeping hemlock died - got creamed in the ice storm and i moved it to a better location - not!
Everything I planted last summer and fall is coming up ! Even the hydrangea made it. What amazes me most this spring, is that the Rose of Sharon has leaves on it already, and the hosta has unfurled.
Bill, I did get a weigela but haven't looked to see if it's budding yet.
Do I prune the Kerria bush? Should I be doing anything to it? I've never owned one so im winging it. LOL
No need to do anything, Celeste, until it gets leggy and has dead branches.
All but the Sienna Sunset coriopses died.
as victor said celeste:)
Thank you both!
Sorry to hear that Ge, good at least one lived!
I lost a lilac I had planted last year....I think it was too wet...also I don't see my astrantia, but it may be late. All the roses are leafed out & looking good. Thought I had lost DL Clearing the Fog, but it was up today..yay! All the delphs are up & strong looking, but they are short lived as said, Pixie. I dug up most of my plants in one of the old beds, so I guess what's up now is it. All the spuria iris are good, & the dwarf iris, new peonies made it, so did the new huechera. Just praying this is a better year for gardening!
My astrantia is doing well, and I've had some delphs going on about 5 years now.
Still waiting for lots to come up, probably behind you by a couple weeks.
There is a Actaea that looked dead last fall. Its back and looking great.
I moved some blooming lilies and now I wonder if I will ever see them again.
They were NOIDS so its no loss. I am going on the lily forum to see if I can get a line on the hazzards of gardening like this.
not having high hopes for the summer glow agastache... it's the only one I don't see growth on.. hoping it's one of the cuttings alive in the basement
I think my Apricot Sprite fooled me and doesnt sport anything green of its own. Weeds from compost Apache Sunset is going great.
I didn't spot any apricot sprite yet either... I didn't have those marked.. but know the area they are in... I will have to make you some cuttings of my desert sunrise.. all my cuttings came back ... it's a big one though... with all the crazy rain last year.. I had to support it to keep it off the ground... years before it wasn't a problem
I will have to pass on that one. I am out of room for big bushy plants.
You are sweet to offer.
I'll look for them JoAnn, thanks.
I was surprised how much their quart perennials grew since we first saw them.
The prices seem larger too. I didnt make a mental note when we were there but the quart Giant Blue Umbrellas hosta was 13 bucks.
The blasted tulips are fantastic and if I hadnt sworn off tulips I would have checked to see if the buckets were marked down.
Well darn looks like all three red columbine bit the dust. They really suffered with the wet last year but I hoped at least one would survive. I ordered a red dicentra 'Burning Hearts' to put there just in case, so all is not lost I guess.
I have 2 clementine reds left from 3 planted.
I have no luck with year end sales. They rarely survive here.
You guys are making me chomp at the bit to get back up there with all the plants that are already up and going! I can't imagine the hosta already unfurling, and for you to have so much already up, Celeste, it sounds like we're WAY behind in coming back. Giddy up, giddy up!!! Sorry to hear so many plants were lost. :(
When are you shuffling off, Louise?
