Skimmers and Biofalls Reviews

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

We're going to put in a waterfall and skimmer this year. Now that there are lots of options available other than Aquascape, I'm looking at possibly saving some money with a different brand.

What brand does everyone have and how do they like it?

All my experience is with aquascape. I have 2 ponds, 2 skimmers and 1 biofall/waterfall. Have to say they've been easy to maintain and reliable. Pricey tho. Can't see how some of the others could be that different in performance.

thanks! I agree on the cost issue, that's why I'm looking at other options. I think we've narrowed it down to the Atlantic falls and skimmer. I can't find anything bad about it. Looks like people just don't review this kind of stuff.

Mine is a Savio. It has been great and have had no issues at all. We bought ours a couple of years ago in September when the ponding season was closing - We managed to save $100 by purchasing at the end of the season.

Good gravy, look at those beautiful lilies!

Thanks for the input.

She must have something good in her gravy, mine don't grow like that!
Is it a secret ingredient?

I use the once a year fertilizer stakes for waterlilies - I also have 20 pots of different waterlilies. I do get a nice lily pad coverage as well as flowers from May to Septemberish/October. Here are the waterlilies at the end of this past March when we had them out of the pond and fertilized. Every other year, they get divided as well.

wow. nice. Guess I better get more than 2! lol.

How deep are yours?

Mrs. Ed,

My lily pots are on the bottom of the pond in my shallow end, which is 3 1/2 feet deep. I do know they are supposed to be in much shallower water. We used to have the plastic file cubes you buy at Walmart to hold the lilies at about the right depth.

A couple of years ago we had a fish get caught between the cubes, so we immediately pulled the cubes out and felt the lilies would have to make do at the depth of 3 1/2 feet and subsequently, we never had any problems with the pad coverage or the flowering of the waterlilies.

The depth of the waterlilies is one reason you see the little 'handles' on the lily pots. DH fashioned a fancy hooking device to haul the waterlilies out of the water - another reason I don't fertilize every month, as it is a chore.

The Red Asagi you see in the front is the fish that was caught between the cubes - even though that was a couple of years ago, you can still see some marks on him from when he was stuck between the cubes. He is also missing some scales from spawning - but that happens anyway.

Thanks!

My pond is pretty shallow. 22" in the deep end with 10" and 4" shelves. I've been keeping the lilies on the 10" shelf, but wonder if they should be deeper. They go to the deep end in the winter.

What types of waterlilies do you have? If you know the names, you could look them up to see what depth they prefer - as you can see though, putting them deeper than the usual requirement didn't hurt my waterlilies.

well they are NOID hardy lilies. one is supposed to be peach and the other is ivory. Well we'll see where I can put them now that we're putting in a skimmer and falls.
