Mrs. Ed,

My lily pots are on the bottom of the pond in my shallow end, which is 3 1/2 feet deep. I do know they are supposed to be in much shallower water. We used to have the plastic file cubes you buy at Walmart to hold the lilies at about the right depth.

A couple of years ago we had a fish get caught between the cubes, so we immediately pulled the cubes out and felt the lilies would have to make do at the depth of 3 1/2 feet and subsequently, we never had any problems with the pad coverage or the flowering of the waterlilies.

The depth of the waterlilies is one reason you see the little 'handles' on the lily pots. DH fashioned a fancy hooking device to haul the waterlilies out of the water - another reason I don't fertilize every month, as it is a chore.

The Red Asagi you see in the front is the fish that was caught between the cubes - even though that was a couple of years ago, you can still see some marks on him from when he was stuck between the cubes. He is also missing some scales from spawning - but that happens anyway.
