Hovering Flies

Every spring, even before I moved into this house, htere have been these hovering small flies on my patio They don't like any of the fly traps or poisons. They aren't flying around the garbage. They like the shade. They disappear at night. I rarely see them in the light. There's just this swarm hovering around. Bigger than gnats but smaller than a house fly! I can't figure out what they are or, more importantly, how to get rid of them! Help

There are several possibilities - would it be possible for you to capture one or more of them and take a photo? (Putting them in the refrigerator for several minutes should keep them still long enough for that.). In the meantime, have a look at the fungus gnats at http://tinyurl.com/yeqye69 and http://tinyurl.com/yaucre9 to see if there is any resemblance to your critters.
