Apropos of Nothing v.11

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

I still think it's drink. You would say 'Lisa doesn't drink.' 'Drinks' just does not sound right to me.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Yeah, but the "doesn't" turns "drink" into an infinitive (to drinken?).

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I wouldn't think so.

Sally and Dick like to drink. Sally drinks on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. Dick drinks on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. But they don't ever drink at the same time. So on Sunday, either Sally drinks OR Dick drinks, but Sally AND Dick don't drink together.

Both Sally and Dick will be entering rehab at the end of the summer. Hic!

I'm dizzy.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

How 'bout changing the email? :-)

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

I did, but how can I go around correcting people's grammar if I'm fuzzy on some minor part?

Redmond, WA

Fun stuff guys! :) I had to google it...

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

good job, kur.

so it should be "neither lisa nor larry drinks."

this distinction was a new one on me:

None of the garbage was picked up.
None of the sentences were punctuated correctly.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks, Kur. I like grammar, too. I think I was the only kid in the sixth grade who wanted to spend MORE time diagramming sentences.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Sick people. The weather is great and you are conjegating verbs. I put a big tree up today and it took the whole day to raise, level, and concrete the base in. Of course the wind started up as soon as I was done. Though I have 3 attachments to stabilize it until the cement hardens. I want it to attracts birds to my window without my cat catching them. Now I can hang a feeder 10 to 20 feet off the ground. Can't wait to get the flickers and Pileated at eye level from the house.

Let me get this straight: You're planting what appears to be a DEAD tree and WE'RE sick?

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

It is so true SK. I will have it in front of the window and it will NEVER obscure my view. Why not plant dead trees? I have many in my garden. I will be looking in the woods this week for more now that the snow is gone.

Dead trees in concrete are okay. It's all the standing dead that falls on my fences that I don't like. :-)

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Find a healty tree that has been left in a burn pile. Then limb it and place it off the ground to age then it should stay standing for quite a while. That is what I did.

There are a couple of things on my "to do" list before I get around to dragging home dead trees & cementing them into the landscape.

That's 'conjugating' . I try to be a spelling snob, but I make too many typos.

The new Center For Urban Waters building in Tacoma has recently installed three very large dead trees on the side facing the water. I am assuming these are for roosting birds. Allegedly they are also installing a 'green' roof complete with plants.
It's going to be an excellent juxtaposition: the building is almost directly in front of the huge Simpson paper processing plant.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Melissa, that's too funny.

Steve, I don't have enough property or testosterone. But I like what you're doing.

SK, my list is kinda long, too. I'm still in cutting Big Leaf Maple saplings phase.

I leave really tall stumps. Does that count? Like 20 feet tall.

SK, I watched the Madonna episode of Glee with my daughter on her computer. Great show! I love the woman who plays the coach of the Cheerios. She plays that kind of character so well.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Melissa I apreciate spelling corrections. I don't have spell check and left it as I thought. Now I have corrected.
I shall take pictures of all of the expected birds that have roosted far away. I hadn't had the tree in for 3 seconds when a small red headed woodpecker landed at the top and I do believe she/he had a smile.

Excellent. How fun it will be to watch the woodpeckers!

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

Sofer, I wish I could transport all my standing dead alders to you (complements of the beavers). As it is, they are simply a hazard. I warn my granddaughter to quickly run through 'the dead zone' as we call it. They seem to stand firm in the strongest winds, and then simply crash over on a still day - go figure.

That is a beautiful bird! I would love to have those in my yard. We have Northern Flickers, and also Downy Woodpeckers. I've also seen a Yellow Bellied Sap Sucker a couple of times.

While everyone else is conjugating verbs, Steve is congregating birds.

:D

"There are a couple of things on my "to do" list before I get around to dragging home dead trees & cementing them into the landscape."

What, Summer, you can drag home dead animals but not dead trees?!?!? LOLOL

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Both of you made me laugh for my morning. Thank you. Ha Ha huh huh chuckle chuckle. See not bad from my desktop this morning. I will have to wait until the sun hits it to get good bird pictures.
Today is the third day the weather man/woman has called for rain and it is again georgeous! Can't wait to get out in the garden and hook up irrigation. Takes me about 1 1/2 days to connect the hoses. I chose this over underground permanent because they even after being blown out freeze and break here.

A W E S O M E!!!!!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Nice bird congregating tree and beautifully placed.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

You do really good work. Love it.

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Love the addition to your landscape Sofer. Great birding and entertainment site. Looking forward to shared photos.

Apropos of nothing, I found a hummingbird nest on my driveway today. Must have been blown out of a nearby tree or shrub. The really sweet thing is it was made from Franny fur! (Franny is our older Australian shepherd, for anyone who has yet to meet her.)

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

And Franny would love that her fur is being used to keep the babies warm.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

oh, what an awesome nest to find, I hope you save it someplace special.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Are they doing drive-bys for the fur somehow?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

One of them is distracting her while the other swoops in for a tuft?

Franny would willingly give her fur, I'm sure! Actually, when we brush her out, we put big globs of her fur in the shrubs around the house for the birds to use. Really! I've seen all kinds of birds taking her fur to use in their nests. It's the softest fur. We've frequently said we could spin her fur into yarn and it would make a soft sweater. I've seen reference somewhere to a woman who spins dog fur into yarn.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

ah, great idea!

http://www.amazon.com/Knitting-Dog-Hair-Better-Sweater/dp/0312152906/ref=si3_rdr_bb_product - A lot of the reviews are tongue-in-cheek for some strange reason...

I put our own hair after a trim, and my cat Stars' fur out for the birds... A Cat-furlined bird nest is just great irony....

Here are some pictures of dogs and their owners wearing their dogs' fur sweaters (there's a sentence for the grammarians ;)) :

We had a Norwegian Elkhound in Alaska. He wanted to be outside in winter so you can imagine how thick his undercoat was. It took up multiple garbage bags when he blew his coat in the spring.

There was a lady who was supposed to knit it into a cap or something for us one year - she was going to combine it with Kiviut - muskoxen hair - but we never did get any of it back . . .

Kur, I'm going to have to check out that link. What a great idea!

Did you see that Molbaks is having a "buy one, get one free" sale on pots today? There are some magnificent $200 pots there. That's a pretty good deal . . .

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Kur, that is a fascinating website. I'm...... sort of at a loss for words.
