Apropos of Nothing v.11

We came from here: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1080198/

This thread can't be derailed because there's no topic. HA!

I have nothing interesting to say. *yawn*

Here's a picture of me in my Easter bonnet. With all the frills upon it.

That's an adorable photo. Love the bonnet!

Willow (and I very much respect her opinions) says that Asperger's, Squeaky Fromme & the "Messiah" are things that men wouldn't pay attention to, but I think that those 3 subjects cross psychology, children, families, crime, politics, music & religion ... to put it mildly.

(Judi)Portland, OR

I can't believe that after such a beautiful day it is back to rain tomorrow. And the day after, and the day after that, and the day after that.......

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Um, I don't think that sunshine guarantees more sunshine. Seems as if the law of averages means that rain is more likely, actually.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

OK I have been away working on my garden so: 1st I LOVED report cards, 2nd some 50 year old men are nice and happily married to their 50 year old wives, 3rd I love Handels Messiah especially "Pie Jesu", have read a book by a local Asperger called "Gorrila Nation" and met the author at Elliot Bay Book store, and I only remember "Squeaky Fromme" was tied into something back in the 70's that I didn't have interest, Sharon Tate murder or something. I have spent the day working in the garden listening to Opera, Peter Gabriel, Bruce Springstein, and several Cello pieces by Yoyo Ma. My favorite piece was "Gabriel's Oboe". This all while smoking a couple of good cigars. You women are so sexist. LOL Anyway when I got my 50 yr old colonoscopy I had them put the scope screen in front of me so I could ask about the things I was seeing when they did it. Didn't bother me much and learned a lot about Peyers Patches, and how to biopsy with a biopsy punch.

Sofer, you brought me the first belly laugh of the day -- Squeaky Fromme took a potshot at Gerald Ford.

Omigosh, I can't stop laughing.

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Steve, seriously, you just made my day.
You, of course, are not being lumped into the same category as this moron I was suckered into dinner with.

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

Pony - love the trip down memory lane with the Easter bonnet, gloves, and patent leathers. I remember all the ladies with their new hats at church (and yes I looked just like you, pleased as punch with myself).

Sofer, thanks for the male slant on things. I thought we were getting a bit into a 'hen party' myself.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

You need me to get you a date with a significant well rounded man. In fact he used to be on this site in the Rocky Mountain forum. His name is Kenton and he happens to be visiting Seattle next week to see the Pac NW before he leave for 3+ years of Plant collection or something in the stepps of Mongolia or something. I think he is about 30 something. Ask Kayte for a date. Really a class act. Artist, Gardener, reaching for a higher level of life through hands on education. Lives in Colorado and is a male soul mate of mine.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Yes Pony I would sweet talk you at church if I were your age. Hey you lived above Boeing field huh?

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Gotcha. Everyone got my address & phone number?

Carnation, WA(Zone 7b)

Anybody still hunt for eggs left by an overgrown rabbit or is that tradition going/gone by the wayside??

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Well if I wasn't flying to AK to go to work I would but not this year. Though the day before will be an event for me with Michigan State playing in the final 4. Yahoo!

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

Sofer- Kind of... it was a little bit farther south. We were up near Pigeon Point.

1. Re Pony's pic: who knew this little girl, so virginal in white, would grow up to love tatoos?
2. I like men who pay attention, and I expect them to do so. Just as I like women who pay attention. That being said, I don't necessarily think everyone needs to know who Squeaky Fromme is or was. Some things are just worth forgetting..
3. Regardless of his level of knowlege, there were plenty of other reasons to escort Mr. Geoduck to the door and say 'bye bye'. I'm pretty sure it started with the very idea that he would invite a woman whom he just met to spend a weekend with him in a hotel digging mollusks. Call me old fashioned, but I think it was more than a bit presumptuous of him. Hey! Maybe he's God's gift to women and it's just well hidden!
4. Soferdig could probably choose men very well, being quite well balanced himself. I always think it takes one to know one, and in general, I trust men's opinions about other men when the man in question is soferdig, or my husband, or any other well balanced male person.
5. Yes to the Easter eggs, but no little kids around to hunt with just now. Maybe in the future! My son and I will be celebrating the new life of Easter by arriving in Blanding, Utah on Easter Sunday. God will understand. He knows how much I need this vacation. Nothing better than a sunrise in the desert!
6. Ah, the joys of dressing up for Easter. My mother frequently had my sister and I in matching outfits. I remember one Easter where we wore lovely pale green capes with little white hats and white gloves. I think I may have been grimacing in the photo. The matching outfits went over just about like a lead balloon with me. I believe it was my mother's tendency to require dressing up every single Sunday that is to blame for the fact that I own only 1 dress, and I've worn it approximately twice. I do not wear pantyhose and would rather die than wear high heels. You'd have to pay me a lot of money to wear white gloves at this point in my life. Nor do I want to spend the time I have left on this earth worrying about using devices on my hair on a daily basis. It's probably a good thing I live on the west coast where I can get away with just being myself. I did get dressed up to go to a fancy party during the holidays, and it was fun, but there was alcohol involved so it took the edge off my discomfort while wearing a dress. I hate to admit this in public.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

I loved that video!

Mom said yesterday that it had been a long time since she made an Easter dress for me. I said that she didn't have to, but she said she always WANTED to. I appreciate now, what she did to make my clothes, but didn't always when I had to wear them.

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

I'd forgotten about the matching dresses. One year my grandma made all the girl cousins the exact same dress, pink seersucker with a lace insert at the chest (no one qualified for a bosom yet). Since clothes were always passed down through the family, my youngest sister had to suffer through about 4-5 reincarnations of that dang thing.

(Judi)Portland, OR

I remember when I was in high school and we were living in Germany (Air Force brat) and my mother would not let us out of the door if we were not dressed to her impeccable standards. She said we represented the US (pressure!). She made us kids matching grey wool bermuda shorts - there were 3 girls & 2 boys. All the same shorts. That's when I found out I was allergic to wool. I had a nasty itchy rash all around my waist where there was no lining. Mother insisted it was psychological because I didn't want to wear those matching bermuda shorts.

I would love a pale green cape now! I like wearing dresses occasionally. And heels. But panty hose? Never!!!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Laurie1, I just got Ian McEwan's newest book Solar. Can't wait to start it.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

I wear it all - I was raised to "dress for the weather" which includes hosiery. I was seriously affected by the story of "The Elves & the Shoemaker" as a child. I wish there had been more choices as a child - I had always wanted a pair of "Bee" tights: yes - yellow & black stripes. A twist on Raggedy Ann's red/white ones, perhaps.
Pix - But we do wear gloves: they are that lovely shade of earth, compost, mulch with an occasional faint green swoosh from weeding. White gloves stressed me out - they could get dirty easily on a young Tomboy's hands.
I am recalling an outfit my Mother made me wear for Easter, and I would have been about 9: green sheath with a pink & green floral coat, white hat & gloves & OMG! white patent slip-ons. I think this was attributable to Jackie Kennedy. I have never worn anything like that since...
Did anyone have a ruffled slip that had a air chamber near the hem that you blew up to make your skirts fuller & poofier? At this point, some are probably scratching there heads...hey! it was a 50's thing!

(Judi)Portland, OR

I didn't have a blow up slip but I did have a ruffled one with tiers. I had forgotten about that...

I have a pair of white ski gloves - does that count?

Burwash Weald, United Kingdom(Zone 9b)

Oh, Portland, marvellous - I haven't read it yet. On my list, now. thanks for reminding me.

Loved the intro photo - sweet, and I love the idea that Pony has kept to the 'all the frills' just changed them to tattos - so much less ironing! I remember having a lovely white shirt with a frilled front which took absolutely time time time to get ironed, perfectly - only to go straight back into the wash after at the end of the day - but gosh, it was great to wear! Hmpf, I even remember enjoying ironing it - something about getting it so crisp.

Heels, no - I'm definately a flattie, but I do have a goooodddd collection, and I keep each pair in their box! Half a dozen dresses, and I like wearing tights - they make your legs just go on and on and on - length is everything! Yes, and I do have some of the longest legs in the world - thank you mothergod, She knew I needed a lift. There is nothing like a good pair of coloured tights under a tulip hemmed dress to show them off.

I'm absolutely laughing at the idea of the blow up underskirt - what happened when you sat down? OHMIGAWD! This could be a real social disaster!

And Sofer, thank you for stepping up for the guys - I think your selection of music excellent, and I do love YoYoMa - his appalacian (sp?) recordings are inspired, as are the tango ones. that man takes real musical risks - but then he is YoYo Ma. Was Gabriel's Oboe one of his piece's?

the slip was flexible, no issues unless you sat on the valve which was a tad uncomfortable, especially while making a valiant attempt to sit still in church.

wool scratchies - let's forget thoses memories. Psychological, my *ss!

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

You know, I hate to be the contrarian here, but some of those little outfits -- yes, even the wool shorts -- sound really cute & I'll bet you all looked adorable.

Now, here's what your mother COULD have done to you: Made you a special outfit each year for the spelling bee (which, thankfully, I won in 8th grade & never had to suffer through again). Ideally, this would be a Western pantsuit in garish colors, to be worn with cowboy boots. One year, this pantsuit was red & blue textured polyester with red embroidery. The next year, I chose the colors: forest green & lime green polyester. The cuffs & hems were once again embroidered. Plus, she always did some weird, unflattering thing with curlers to my hair, and I wore the cheapest, thickest glasses she could find.

Being that I kind of still looked like a boy in junior high, the whole effect was really rather alarming.

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

Great memories. I didn't do the blow-up slip, but did do the petticoat thing. I remember it was way cool to sit down in the gymnasium for an assembly and 'arrange' your petticoat and dress so no leg or foot was showing. We must have looked like a bunch of flowers fresh off a tree. Toni Barr always had the fullest slip and I think her mom curled her hair every morning to a perfect flip. Funny how you remember the name of long-ago envies. This was 2nd grade.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

No blow-up slip here, but Yes to the petticoat.

I love tights too. I wore a lot of skirts and sweaters when I taught. I love sweaters, too.

Just came in from being outside all day. Lovely. My face feels kinda prickly. I did put on some sunscreen. Guess I should have worn a hat. Anybody else get tan lines by their wrists cuz of wearing gloves?

Going to Good Friday service -one of my sons is preaching the sermon.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Remember pettipants? Or how about hot pants and white go go boots? If I could find the picture and get it on my computer, you would DIE laughing.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Go find the picture - I wanna die laughing. I don't think I've ever heard of pettipants. But I did have go go boots with gold fringe on them :-). And I thought my parents didn't splurge on me. Ha!

When I was little, my brother and I stopped at a drive-in where there were go go dancers. Go figure. In Fairbanks, Alaska. It was, obviously, seasonal.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I will look tonight and see if I can scan it to my computer. Remember, I was 18. But you guys all have to post a photo that is equally embarrassing, reflecting the fads of the time. Sofer, did you have long hair?

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Well, I would, but I don't have a scanner. I'll see if I can't find some and get them scanned this weekend.

(Pony) Lakewood, WA(Zone 8a)

My Mom made most of my clothes when I was in gradeschool. The stars-and-stripes bellbottomed pants really stand out in my memories. I might have a photo somewhere, but I don't have a scanner anymore.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I made a pair of orange hiphugger bellbottom pants and a coordinating orange dotted midriff top for my Home Ec project in 9th grade. I hope I am the only person to remember this.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

The pettipants were also known as bloomers. They became popular in our town, probably influenced by that show 'Here Comes the Brides' starring Bobby Sherman. I lived in Iowa, and wanted to move to Seattle. Imagine my shock when I did come out here, and it did not look anything like the show.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

I can still remember the theme song from the show - "Look out everyone here come the brides." I love the TV theme songs of the 60's and 70's and the way it was orchestrated.

My mother made culotte dresses with dropped waists for both of us - matching fabrics and matching patterns. They were all in fabrics from the 60's with wild prints in orange and aqua. I thought it was great that my mother took such time and care to make me look 'hip'.

Sewing is clearly a lost art. How often does that happen any more? My mom worked full time, sewed clothes for me, and wrote a genealogical book. Talk about being busy. No wonder she didn't garden. :-)

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

pettipants-had forgotten about them...and for good reason.

It was the red sailor dress that pushed me over the edge: that's about the time I started sewing for myself, and wearing colours I liked. Those were the days of dress codes requiring girls not wear pants. Tights were a must.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Yes, I remember how hard it was to let my daughter wear jeans to school in sixth grade. Now she is a clothes-hound and dresses very well. Owns lots of dresses.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

We had a dress code, as well, no pants. I was in pep club, and we had uniform check before every game and event. We had to kneel on our knees and we were checked to make sure the hems touched the floors. We didn't think it was very fair that we were all frumpy and the cheerleaders got to wear cute short skirts. So we just rolled our skirts up after the checks.

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

OK I got out of the garden. All this clothing talk kind of leaves me out. I though did have to wear a Polyester Neru Jacket with a big necklace to get the town up to speed with Polyester. My mother had an apparel store and made my sister and I set the pace with clothing.
Laurie the piece called "Gabriel's Oboe" is on the CD that YoYo did with Ennion Morricone and is absolutely fabulous.
Yes Lynn I had long blonde hair. This is when I was in college after my vet school made me trim it down. Oh fooey I can't find it.
