rosemary germination

Mount Vernon, OH

I am having a hard time germinating rosemary. Anyone have any suggestions? I tried freezing the seed, refrigerating the seed, changing the temps at night and day (maybe it wasn't as extreme as needed?)
Thanks!

I found that cactus soil works best for germinating rosemary. I didn't do any of the things that you mentioned, but night temp is cooler than day. Last year I started them under lights and most germinated. This year, I have them in the Greenhouse with natural light, which isn't the best with cloudy days. They took about 20 days to germinate there.

I bought "primed" Rosemary seed from Johnny's Selected Seeds, and it germinated well. The plants have been wonderful (great flavor), but I mistreated them and am down to just two left.

Rosemary seems to have a low germination percentage.Maybe 30 percent for me.Mix sand and seed starting soil less medium together.Place under lights. It takes a few weeks for germination.Buy a few different brands of seed. One might do better than an other. If all else fails buy the plant. It is available everywhere when stores start selling herbs in the spring.I have expanded my rosemary by taking cuttings. Its faster and more reliable.Edge

thanks everyone! I will try everyone's suggestions. I like experimenting seeding. lol. I tried three different brands with two, nothing coming up to, one with just one plant (still seeing if it will survive.)

Hi,
I didn't know that Rosemary has seeds. I always use cuttings to grow new plants.

I bought a packet of seeds last year / or the fall before and Farm & Fleet, i believe...

just sprinkled some seeds in some 3" pots [with Miracle Gro potting soil] and put them outside. did nothing special and they grew like crazy. I really need to transplant them too.

I have yet to see them bloom... they;d have to if there are seeds involved. maybe this year.

wonder if they are bi-annuals like a lot of herbs are.

Rosemary is a perennial.Yes it flowers and goes to seed.
Cuttings are easy if you use tender new growth.Old stems are very woody and harder to start.Edge

I started some rosemary seeds on peat so far it has done the best with germination. I have 12 little babies coming up. (I also did get cuttings) lol. Does anyone know how to trim them into pine tree shape? Love the way those look.

I have tried several packages of Rosemary over the years and generally get %17 germination. This is without bottom heat, changing day & night temps etc. It is a pain, but I have learned to treasure what success get!

My germination turned out well I have around 20 plants so I ended up with around 75% germination. Which is pretty good compared to the 1 little one I was getting.
