Aggressive hen used to be so sweet?

Biggs, KY(Zone 6a)

I used your method on one of my game hens today. she was tormenting the barred rock hen who was in the nest. I used your method and it took a while. she is a stubborn girl. But when I put her back down she lesft the other hen alone.

She might be the least dominate hen and desperately looking for someone to pick on. I have one of these. The other hens are sweet to humans and other pets but mean to the other chickens.

Reassure her that she is safe and loved. This is what I have to do. I pet her when she is calm. If she tries to attack I withhold my love and either walk away or wait for her to stop. Sometimes, gently picking them up helps, too. I would not suggest tipping them upside down. This causes stress and can harm her.

My hen has really calmed down.

I'm sure Cajun that some are a little more difficult than others and so the process may take a little longer, or may need repeating as a reminder, but I do believe that those who love their birds enough to work with them rather than want to get even or revenge will be rewarded for their efforts. Also when you demonstrate for other how it works they are sure you are a genius...LOL. Don't forget even after being successful there are those moments that they need to be reminded. I see it with the girls even as they eat and go for water, some times those lower in the pecking order forget the order and the dominant quickly remind them of who eats and drinks first...I love the things they teach me. Hay.

Animal behavior is amazing to me! I love to watch the chicks, their order was established very early even when they were still all fuzzy. They weren't just walking around looking cute, their little minds were working. The dogs sit with me a lot, then I get to see their interactions. One of my dogs has no interest in being in charge of anything, she is also the biggest at 118 lbs. The chicks aren't afraid of her at all and will often peck at her string of drool. She never moves when they do that, but sometimes she shuts her eyes and wags her tail, she is fabulous with all babies. The smallest dog (25 pounds) doesn't bother the chicks at all but wants to keep the other dog away from them. He likes to be in charge of other dogs. Years of obedience work and all it takes is a LOOK from me and he stops.

Here is a pic of my roos that attacked each other after I dominated them, the golden on the left, and the standard on the right. The next will be them roosting together

Pretty amazing! But they do each look as if they are trying to pretend the other isn't there.

Wear your Chicken Whisperer crown proudly! I swear by the humane HAY method of calming and dominating chickens. I passed your infor along to a chicken friend of mine, she has two yearling hens (RIR's) that HATE the sight of each other. She's going to give it a try tomorrow!

Porkpal, you made me laugh, I remember when raising my children, they made their beds reluctantly, with a "I hate this attitude" but they still made them...LOL I said dominated, I did not say happy...LOL. Hay

That's funny! He'd probably love it though, and get in trouble just to have you do it....LOL! I'm sure my great-nieces would be doing that (they are 2, 4, and 6).
