This is my first time starting lettuce seeds indoors in cowpots. I plan on transported them to my garden in a few weeks. I have placed the pots in a pan next to a window that gets direct sunlight. The first 2 weeks I had plastic around the pots. They sprouted in a week, looked great, and we're growing fast. After 2 weeks I removed the plastic. I watered from the bottom, but noticed the tops would get dry, so I added water to the top. A friend told me to put a fan in the room. Afterwards, I noticed they started drooping n didn't seem to be growing as fast, so I turned the fan off. They look ok, but hardly any seem to be standing on there own. However, I went in today and there's mold on the side of the cowpots. I can't detect any mold on the plants, but not sure what to do. The weather should be nice 70s-80s the next few days (Kansas), and I thought about putting them outside during the day. I've heard it might be windy, so not sure if that's a good idea. Any advice would be helpful.
White mold on cowpots
Get them outside in a sheltered spot and let them dry out. You may try spraying them with a peroxide mix. Good luck. I do all my seedlingss under cheap flourescent lights and have great luck. Seedlings tend to get leggy and flop when they are in windows.
Don't worry about the mold, it is just an adventitious mold that is feeding on the organic matter of the peat pot. It is not a plant pathogen. Getting them outside as kobwebz suggested will help dry the pots and eliminate the mold. Remember to keep them out of direct sunlight and sheltered from the wind for a few days or they will fry.
What's something good that would work to block wind n sun? I was thinking of cutting a cardboard box to place around the pan. Its suppose to be windy, so I'll just need to weigh it down. Should I bring them inside at night?
I harden off my babies by putting them up against the wall on from porch, it faces south, they get a small amount of sunlight and not much wind.
Bring them in at night?
I also have a south facing front porch and have my plants hardening off there as we speak. I sometimes have to put something nearby to break the wind... I do bring my plants in at night when it is dropping into the 40's (b/c it sometimes sneaks into the 30's regardless of what the weatherman has said) This week we are supposed to be in the 50's at night, so I plant to leave them out overnight. I've been doing the in and out routine for 5 or 6 days now. Hope that helps.
I do not bring the perennials in at night if it's in the mid 30's or above, however annuals and lettuce I would bring in if it get's into the 40's as nini1953 suggested.
Thanks so much for your help:)
