I saw a Painted Lady this morning and this Question Mark is from yesterday. No RSP's yet which is unusual.

woohoo!! Wtg ...I have seen Monarchs but don't have any eggs as yet. I overwintered some tropical MW so I would be ready, but no takers. The BST on the other hand are laying eggs before I get plants in the ground. LOL! I bought three more Rue plants yesterday and within an hour they had about 6 eggs on them.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Congrats on the future BST's Sheila.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

I still have yet to find rue any where......

NE Medina Co., TX(Zone 8a)

So far I've only found BST cats on wild dill. Although I know I saw that butterfly on parsley also! I also saw a VF laying eggs on Maypop the other day.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I saw an Eastern ST today and pair of Red Spotted Purple and perhaps a Sulpher. Wooohoooo. Can't wait to see more.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Nanny...I just happened to see this in the herb section of Home Depot.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Hey, Let me look today and see if I have any seedlings. Be sure to look in the herb section.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Mrs_Ed....if you do have seedlings, please take a picture. I put seeds out but never saw anything pop up.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Well I didn't plant any, but I often get volunteers off the main plant. I'll check today.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Nan, I've one of the common Rues in my garden for several years. I've yet seen BST deposit any eggs nor would they use them as host? I enjoy the plant for it's has an airy effect in that little corner of the garden.

DH found this Viceroy (?) resting afoot in the garden. I gently let it climb to my finger, and I brought it to the coneflower 'Sunrise' to rest. After a moment or two, it took off above the Magnolia tree top.

Nice viceroy, looks like it just emerged the colors are bright!
I caught a pic of this red admiral basking by the pond yesterday.

Thank you Sheila for the confirmation of its identity. What do Viceroys use as hostplant please? At first I thought I saw my first Monarch, I hurried toward the tropical milkweeds in blooms, then I realized it wasn't.

This site is the best for a list of host plants by butterflies...

Sheila, that website has a wealth of information on hostplants. I see that the Viceroy and RSP share many a common hostplants such as various willows and Cherries. Many, many thanks.

Wow GP, how exciting that's! Congrats.

Here is a pix of Common Rue with their dainty white fluffy flowers.

Lots of activity this weekend. My local home depot had a $2 sale on 1 gal milkweed and pentas could not pass it up. Still have a long way to go in the garden but it is taking shape well. Here is a pic of one portion of the garden.

As they say, if you build it they will come! You are well on your way to a butterfly haven! Good job.

I checked again this morning and found 3 Black Swallowtail cats on one Dill plant.

Yea!! Looks like you are in business now.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Boy, I wish I found them this early! I would love to raise some to butterflies.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

I bet you could find some red admirals out there somewhere, nanny

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Nanny.... Just a pot of parsley or dill on a patio will draw the BST to lay eggs. Then you will be in business.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Probably still too early here. Boy last year was a bad year for the BSTs up here. The year before I had them like crazy.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

WOO HOO!!! My first Monarch for this year!!

Last year was bad here for everything! I found several BST cats while just out walking, but they are so late here. I just will not do them again if they are that late.

Congrats Nan, I can't wait to see mine.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I just got the BST come through this week. I am glad but the parsley is starting to look a bit scraggly. I need to start over, it is two years now.

Hope no one minds, I've started a new thread.
