Ordered Bulbs for fall already just now at Brent and Beckies

Each year I think about ordering bulbs for fall planting each spring on line but I don't do it. Then fall comes around and I buy afew bags of mixed daffodils locally and sometimes some tulips. This year I decided the heck with it, I am going to order NOW!!!!! This way I am committed. They arrive in the fall and I will have to find the time and energy to plant them. I had better, I spent five hundred bucks on this, yikes. Don't know if that calls for a smiley face or a big frown. Certainly in the spring when they bloom, it will be big time lots of smiles.

This all goes with my plan of cottage garden and lots of color look around here and will add to the daylilies, lilies and iris I already have and am adding around here. Spring bulbs belong with my plan, I just have not gotten too much done on that front. It seems to me that a bed with daylilies, lilies and spring bulbs of daffs and tulips is the perfect combo and that is what I have been planning for as I put in my daylily beds.

I ordered lots of tulips. Stuck mostly to the Darwin hybrids as that is the best bet for coming up year after year but snuck in afew others too because I just could not resist.

Got a hundred each of -
Beauty of Apeldoorn
Darwin Hybrid Mixture
Gudoshnik

Then I bought ten of each of these others to do groupings of them around the garden. Not sure if I should plant ten in each cluster or do each as two of five and have tulips in more spots?
Monte Carlo
Tequilla Sunrise
Synaeda Amor
Grand Perfection
Big Chief
Orange Queen
Marit
Jaap Groot
Candy Apple Delight

Gezz, I didn't bother to count them up before I hit the send button. I kinda went overboard here at 390 tulops. I do love tulips though.

My dad grew tulips when I was a kid and they were his favorite flower. Most years at Eastertime I can remember mom and me being posed in the garden in our easter outfits after going to church in front of the bed of tulips. Brings back lots of nostalgia but that is not why I love them. I just think they are lovely and I like lots of bloom all season long. I like that to start in the spring and tulips are very colorful and elegant too :-))

I have the Tequilla Sunrise and LOVE them. Think you will be happy with them. Good idea ordering now also, nows the time to look around and see where you still need what. Off to Brent & Beckies...hehe

Then on to the Daffoldils. Those are my favorite spring blooms. Instead of any landscaping mixtures as I usually get I just picked fancy ones in groups of ten mostly but uped those to groups of 50 for two of them.

50 groups-
York Minster
Maria

Then 20 group of-
Cum Laude

The rest in groups of ten-
Full Throttle
High Society
Pinza
Chromacolor
Perfect Lady
Double Smiles
Falconet

So I only have 190 daffs, which is less than I bought last fall in the local cheapo mix. But I went for the fancy ones I do not have any of. I am going to plant these fancy ones in my favorite gardenbeds in small groupings.

I just knew that if I waited I wouldn't do this. And I do want those bulbs. Brent and Beckies has a 5% off plan if you order early. Actually before July first but things sell out. Then if you actually pay now instead of waiting for later, they give you 10% off. When you order before you actually pay they give you a choice. I paid now because that 10% took care of my shipping and made shipping free for me.

Last on the order were 50 Sky Beauty Dutch Iris and 10 Crocus olivieri balansae - Zwanenburg. Bith too beautiful to pass up.

I need to order some crocus mixes somewhere else as they didn't really have what I wanted crocus wise at Brent and Beckies. I want some mixed bags of both the early snow crocus and the large Dutch flowering that I have already growing around here.

Hi, Newyorkrita,

Sounds like you have a fun bulb project in the works! I hope you will post lots of pics when they come up!

I wish I could order lots of tulips too but I find for us the bulbs are just expensive squirrel/rabbit/chipmunk food and if they do come up then they are an expensive dessert buffet for the deer. So sad. I do buy a few already grown from HD and plant them in pots on the deck and front porch~~although the deer climb the steps to the porch and devour those oftentimes, too.

I have finally gotten my daff plantings (sort of) the way I want them, though. After six years of ordering all kinds from the catalogs I finally have culled out my daffs to bloom at the right times in the right colors with the right companion plants. This took a while to work out!

Although I am taking some time to rearrange them 'in the green' this week so that I can further refine the 'color echoes'. When I started with daffs several years ago I had little idea that there were so many nuances to consider~~shape, bloom time, growth habit, colors and companion plants. Who would know?! But I learned a lot from the nice people in our Daffodil club.

Now I am concentrating on Hyacinths since the critters are (apparently) not so keen on eating them and they might survive at least for one season. I have planted thousands of grape hyacinths to bloom with the daffs in the past but I notice that something came in and chewed off all the green on several patches. Oh, well. The H. Orientalis seem to be undisturbed, though, and I'm ordering more of those for next year.

Well, I didn't mean to go on a whining binge about my deer problems, but I am interested in your progress in the bulb garden.

I don't know if you have researched Garden Watchdog on bulb resources, but if you are buying large quantities of bulbs, you might want to look at VanEngelen's wholesale catalogue too if you haven't already. They sometimes have very good prices and I have generally found them to be a good source. And eflowergarden.com too. Burt there is a good guy and easy to deal with.

Again, good luck with your Cottage Bulb Garden . t.

(I thought these pink daffs would work with the bleeding hearts but not quite right so will have to move them this week).

I cannot wait to see your plantings next spring. Be sure to post when they all start to bloom!!

I think I would go crazy if I had to work on color patterns. I just plant my daffs and be done with it. No matter what color they are, they will look good to me. Besides nothing else but crocus bloom this early in my garden.

I do love bulbs and very fortunate as there are no deer here.

And thanks, I do know about VanEngelen's and might order more when they post there catalog for 2010.

Will be taking lots of pictures when all this blooms next spring!
