i see them usually solitary. largest group i ever saw was 3-4 roosting for the night on a leaf stem (they bite into the stem and hang on)
are these some kind of native bee? do they have a hive? (i rarely see them, and only the one time in that small group)
they look like a smaller streamlined bee, purple / violet coloring. they kinda hover and flit from place to place..

Yours may be Homalictus bees (see http://tinyurl.com/yzelghk), but getting a specific i.d. from your description is problematic; there are some 1,500 bee species native to Australia.
