strange small grey spider looks like mold / thorn

St. Marys, Australia

don't have a cam but saw weird spider in garden.
thought it was mold or thorn.. then maybe a tick..?
here's a little diagram thing

it's grey-ish in color.. looks like mottled fungus / mold, slight ridge along back (looks like a dull thorn)

unlike any arachnid configuration i've ever seen.

spider is hugging squat against branch, also kinda looks like a crab the way it's all tucked in..

My best guess is that this is an orb-weaving spider (family Araneidae) in the genus Dolophones - see http://tinyurl.com/yhb955r. These sometimes are called 'wrap-around spiders' because of their habit of pressing their body against twigs and the like at rest. At least one species, Dolophones turrigera has a prominent 'hump' on its back.
