I'm not sure this is the right place to post this. Please let me know if it isn't. Hopefully someone can help with this issue. The entrance to my house is like an alcove (not sure how else to describe it). It has two skylights and last year it was like a death trap for hummingbirds. They flew in but saw the skylights as the only exit. They would exhaust themselves and keep banging against the windows trying to get out. I rescued five and am pretty sure none died in there but it was heart wrenching to watch. It was also hard to reach them! We bought the house last July, the sellers had a planter with flowers in that area. Needless to say, the planter is gone. Does anyone have any ideas how I can let the light of the skylights in but somehow prevent the hummers from seeing them as an exit? I think not having the flowers there will help but I don't want to take any chances. Thanks.
Need help with hummingbirds!
You have a very unique problem and I wish I had an answer for you. Since there are no longer any flowers there to attract them hopefully they will not venture to that area. That must be heartbreaking to have them trapped in there.
I know when they get trapped in our garage I use a broom and they land on the bristles and I just carry them outside. I hope someone comes along with some ideas for you...good luck.
Hopefully the flowers were the draw for the Hummingbirds and since you took the planter out, maybe your problem is solved. If not, perhaps planting a flowering plant they do like further away would keep them away from the alcove.
I think Gardenpom has the answer, a flowering plant farther away from that area, but where the birds could see it will help. I'd also try to hang a feeder farther away too.
Do hope you've already solved the problem by removing the plants. Hope you'll let us know how it's turned out and enjoy these delightful little birds.
There are a few catalogs that have the little clear stickers that you put on windows. You can't really see them, but supposedly the birds can. They are made specifically to keep birds from flying into wondows.

the stickers are a good idea.
My mother has this problem with her garage too. she throws a rope over the rafters and hoists up a feeder. Every once in a while, she'll lower it until it can see the outside. Maybe you can do the same. Put up a hook with a pulley and attach a feeder. That combined with the stickers would be a good plan, I think.
Thanks for all your suggestions. I had thought about those stickers. I will let you know, I think it will be awhile. We are expecting snow today. Yuck.
