Vacuum Seeling Seed Packets????

Fort Washington, MD

I have a foodsaver. Is it a good idea to vacuum seal partial seed packets?

Personally I would not. Seeds are living and breathing. To suck out all air may harm them. I do seal my seeds in zip bags but they have "some" air to breath. THEN I place them in a non humid, cool, dark place. The deep freezer is great for this if you are done for the season. I place mine in a gasket glass jar (sealed in baggies) and dont think about it till next year. Then set out on the counter and let come up to room temp before opening. I'm with backyardheirloom. I have never vacuum-packed a seed and I've been gardening for more than 25 years. I've read the claims by companies selling seeds that are supposed to last in a tin can for 10 years. I don't think so. I also came across a blog about a month ago where the woman had seeds she'd bought sealed in a such a way 9 years ago. She planted the seeds and I think she got about 10% germination, which is a huge waste of money. If you have some you can't propagate and save, then storing them in a jar in the fridge with a little uncooked rice to absorb moisture is fine. I have not bothered to go as far as deep freezing them, but I churn through my seeds pretty quick.
