It looks great! You can always plant more Milkweed. At some point each summer you will have a "lack of host plant crisis" ;)
I want to start a Facebook "cause" about planting BF host
Thanks, this a lot of fun and I am already seeing some butterflys here and there in my garden.
Oh-I posted this on the beginner's flowers forum but haven't gotten a response yet. Do any of you know what these are? They have congregated at the tips of many branches on my Turk's Cap. I believe they are responsible for destroying the pink blooms that were just beginning to develop.
I can tell you what they are, but not how to rid of them without killing lady bug and butterfly larvae. I have them this year and plan to use a cotton ball and alchol as was suggested

Note: stop by CVS on the way home and buy big jug of rubbing alcohol.
Thanks Sheila!!!
It can't be too good on the plants so I am going to water it down a bit at first and use it on some of my more prolific plants first. Good luck!

Sheila- I used 2 cups of isopropyl alcohol and 2 cups of water and just sprayed like mad yesterday. The infestation was great, but the solution you recommended seemed to do the trick. This evening, the bugs were in much fewer numbers, but I will treat aggressively and hopefully keep them at bay. Thanks again.
Hey guys, sorry I was MIA for a few days. My subscription expired and I just got back active today.
I still have alot of Milkweed and Zinnia seeds if anyone is interested.
Jennifer
Joined the FB site just now... aka Jo Kelly is the user handle for me on FB
Very cool, thanks!
We now have 197 members! Come join us if you haven't :)
jlp222,
Do you still have milkweed seed? I've never grown it but love my butterflies and hummers.
Patti
OH, and forgot to mention.......I am the 200th friend to your FB sight. I don't have a lot of attracters for the butterflies and hummingbirds, so any seeds, etc would be greatly appreciated. I have zinnias and butterfly bushes but the bf bushes are really small right now. Thought I had lost all of them during the extremem heat here when I skipped 1 day of watering, but only lost 1out of 5.
That heat was pretty fierce this year. My BF bushes just about died also. I have trimmed them back some but didn't want to completely cut them yet.
Hey everyone, I am back at Daves! I just re-joined after a very busy few months. I do still have milkweed seeds, and also some zinnia seeds. If anyone would like some, please let me know! Milkweed seeds do like some cold before germinating, so get started soon. :) Jennifer
Come join if you haven't yet!
I would like some milkweed seed. I already have my zinnia's planted. I'm in the address exchange.
I'll try to find you on FB also. I don't go there a lot, but will see.
Thanks!
Patti
Crit - have milkweed seed, will travel.
i had my yard certified as a Monarch Waystation through the University of Kansas' MonarchWatch program.

Also - so you know- there are other butterfly groups on FB.

I have purchased seed here and Bobby is terrific to work with.
Also - I bought my first milkweed seeds from Onalee's Seeds. Onalee is a member of DG (I think) and offers some products here through the vendor area.
Don't forget there are many other plants you can install that are host plants for larvae for a number of species! Most common are dill, fennel, parsley, asters, passiflora, and on and on!
I have in my garden this year: Asclepias incarnata, A. curassavica, A. purpuraescens, A. exalta, A. physocarpus, A. tuberosa.
Let me know how it goes.
Great. Thanks! I have out parsley, dill, fennel seed that hasn't sprouted yet. I'm not familiar with botanical names so am not sure what it is you have in your yard. lol
Ooops!
Well Asclepias is the Milkweed family, period. So all those listed up there are just different kinds of milkweed. The more the merrier! I was happy to find some that prefer shade, so I can start filling up the shady part of the yard. :)
I have a couple of asters too that get chewed down to the ground every year! They barely bloom, poor things, but like I said - I garden for wildlife!
I have been watching the house finches eat my sedum "autumn joy" one bite at a time. Here we thought it was rabbits, but now I know the culprits.
Fun! I'm working for bumble bees this year, though.
Have I showed you this link?
