CLOSED: We're INVADED with these in the house!! HELP!!

Huntsville, AR

At first they were kinda' cute, but "AAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!!!"

They're multiplying FAST!! Hubby killed about 20 in our kitchen yesterday.
We've burned some 'Locust wood' in the same room....could they be related to the wood, or something??

Oh my goodness...

Please help!!
They like the kitchen window area....and the sink below it!!
They're kinda' becoming a plague now!!

You have good instincts: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/27/

They are Locust Borers. I can't give you any suggestions on what to do about the indoor population though.

WoW!!

Thanks Melody!!

Hubby will be happy to know that he adopted them when he brought in the firewood!!

Thanks for your fast reply...

The adults feed on goldenrod pollen, so chances are you'll mercifully be limited to one generation inside the house.

I thought they were pretty too...I have an 8x10 framed of the image I shot on my 'bug wall' (my husband has learned not to even ask)

I'm so bad Melody....
I can't hurt a flea.....I was rescuing them for the longest time (trap and release) but hubby said that he thinks they're coming right back IN!!

So, I've turned my head as he traps and releases them into the toilet now...
(I still feel bad....I feel bad for ANY life that's in the wrong place at the wrong time.)

Anyway...
Thanks for your great response..I'm SO glad to hear that we're possibly only dealing with a single generation...(but what about the (their) kids??!!
Yikes!!

Hey, can you post a picture of your bug collection?? I'd love to see it, and I'm sure others would too!
I started one in a little container, but have lost it now...

suunto might have to give us their reproductive information, but I don't *think* they will breed and reproduce. You are probably dealing with adults emerging from a larval stage in the locust wood where they were dormant until your indoor temps woke them up.

I rotate my bug collection with the best of these: http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/imagesbyuser.php?user=melody

Some are not frame-worthy as many bugs don't co-operate by posing. My collection are images, as I'm allergic to anything that I potentially have to maintain or keep dusted.

To the best of my knowledge, there is only one species of long-horned wood-boring beetle in North America that will attack existing structures, and that is the old house borer, Hylotrupes bajulus, an introduced species - see http://tinyurl.com/yfsa7gu for more information. Locust borers will do no damage indoors.
