Picture is not that great - colorful Cedar Waxwings but colors don't show up in this photo.
Birds
You get cedar waxwings? Huh, I don't think we get them here....I'll need to see what we can do about that......
Pyracantha and other fruiting trees/bushes - they love them. Our friends always had them when they lived in Penasquitos and they were eating the Pyracantha berries. We've never seen them here - maybe we're just off the beaten path, but I would think they would go for our grapes and/or Toyon.
We have pyracantha...no waxwings...at least I don't think so.....
Cedar waxwings....cool! I have mockingbirds that eat the blueberries off a blueberry bush I have...but no cedar waxwings. I planted some other things last year, a pyracantha, a bunch of creeping mahonia (a native, non-poisonous) and berberis darwinii (non-poisonous), all of which fruit (they have little fruits developing right now)...I'm hoping the little birdies will like them.
I had a feeling you had Pyracantha, Sherry. I bet we're just not on their flight path. :-(
You don't get them either?
We used to only get them here when we had a really cold winter, but now the flock seems to show up every year.
Nope.
I am planting berry bushes/vines (4 -blue, black, boysen and raspberries) this year and look forward to the fruit, but I guess I will need to fight the birds for it. Maybe we can share and I can net part of each plant. I can plant pyracantha all for them. Don't they get drunk on those?
QG, can you put a frame over them and drape bird netting? It's a pain, but it does help.
Good idea. Last year I draped the netting over the tomato (all in pots) as the birds were getting some, and I hardly had that many to share with them.
