This is Rock Star our Polish rooster. RS used to live with the ducks because the other chickens would always pluck his crest feathers out, and once started, they'd keep picking because he'd be bleeding.
However, RS decided that he really needed to be with "his own kind" so one day he flew over the fence. I decided to wait and see how it went. Well, he got into a tiff withour Speckled Sussex rooster and actually seemed to come out on top. But he did get a minor injury on his head and so when my husband went out to close up the coop, he noticed that the hens were picking at his head because he lost a few feathers and there was a little blood. So I brought out the Blue Kote and sprayed just the area that needed it. This stopped the picking immediately (no more red to be seen).
So here's Rock Star with his partially dyed "do". Just the base of his crest feathers are purple, but the ends are the normal color. It doesn't show up in the photo as well as in real life unfortunately, but you get the idea.
Punk rock Polish rooster!
That is an amazing do! The chicks should be all over him...in a good way.
They should, but the poor guy isn't getting any action. He tries and tries, but they just squawk and run away.
He's so funny though the way he struts around with his chest out keeping track of everyone. He's a good boy - alerts the hens to any food he finds. Our other rooster doesn't do that so much, but he gets all the girls. It's just not fair.
They will be sorry, someday, when he is famous and they will realise they had their chance and wasted it.
I see super models and a trophy wife in his future.
Speaking of blue kote I got some today because my EE`s butt was bleeding and they were picking at her so she stayed in a cage last night untill I could get the blue kote. How in the world do you spray a hens butt and try to hang onto her at the same time????Both my hands are blue the poor chicken has a blue butt ,tail feathers, and some on her legs.Hope I got the place that had been bleeding. But she is happy to be out of the cage

oh my....the blue, blue image!!! lolol...
OH he is pretty... and when I stop laughing please let WREN know that I do love her and that naming my one and only polish after her is a term of enderment towards her for our NWD's..... Oh I love this guy... and Wren too... LOL
Hold the chicken upside down by the legs... in a couple of minutes they get calm and it's much easier to doctor them. I think all the blood rushing to their brains gives them thoughts and they don't know what to do with them... LOL
LOL Jay, I will have to remember that one.
Me too, I would love to think new thoughts....
Now who will hold me up by my feet?
I was thinking standing up against the wall on my hands?? hummm but Billy wont leave me alone and will try to do the same thing
Just how LONG do you have to hold them by the feet for them to settle? Mine are pretty opposed to the upside down thing - very UNsettled!
so r mine.. very very unsettled by it
As I recall, it takes about a minute... I let mine hang by the legs, holding the wings midway to minimize flapping, so they were completely upsidedown. I don't know if this would work if you just put the chicken on its back.
The first time I was told this trick I was sceptical, but I've been to developing countries and they hang chickens by their legs from the handle bars of the bicycles all the time, and I always wondered how they got the chickens to be so quiet... it just happens, sort of like sitting a sheep on its butt.
Mine settle down quickly if I lie them on their backs in my lap - for dusting and banding and such. I don't know how much blue I'd be wearing if I tried to spray them like that, though.
