Here I show up again as it is finially the start of spring. Can't stand winter, too depressing. Non of my lilies has yet started growing but the daffidils and wood hycacinth are up with green leaves already, not near blooming though.
I have a spot in part shade that I want to plant lilies in, I redid this garden late last fall. I was thinking of the tets because they should have stronger stems and not lean so much. I wanted a naturalized effect at the back of the border.
But I would really like them to be fragrant and it doesn't note anything for frangance on this collection. I did e-mail them but last year no one answered my e-mail questions there so I will be surprised if I get an answer. So I thought I would try here. Thanks!
Anyone tried bulbs from the Lily Gardens tet trumpet collection? What do you think? I have to get this right as I am just starting this new garden bed. Loved the bulbs I got from LG last year.
Lily Garden Flugelhorn Trumpet Collection
Rita,
My experience with trumpets is that they do tend to have spindly stems relative to other lilies and tend to lean a lot - most of mine require staking and that is in mostly sun - Texas sun. If you plan on having them in a shady area they'll likely lean even more. That said, most trumpets are very fragrant. You might try OT's which can be very tall but tend to have stronger stems, and are also usually very fragrant. I even have some LA's such as Swansea which got nearly 5 ft tall last year - most LA's are fragrant unlike most straight Asiatics, but even the LA fragrance is relatively mild in comparison to that of Orientals, OT's, and Trumpets.
You can't go wrong with bulbs from either Lily Garden or B&D, the latter of which I believe sells the Flugelhorn collection. I buy most of my lilies from B&D though I have been increasingly patronizing Buggycrazy. Buggycrazy is another outstanding source but I believe hers are available only during the fall whereas the other two sell both fall and spring.
How tall do you need these 'back of the border' lilies to be?
I never did get to buy from Buggy last year even though I ment too. I got involved in a big project digging and moving lots of my daylilies including one entire bed plus a the same with a rose bed. By the time that was finished I couldn't even think of doing more garden work.
So now I am starting a new bed that I put in. Hasn't got anything in it. Its not very wide but I want lilies in the back. I hate for them to lean too much, I wonder if I should try some other type in the back? I really want fragrance and I fell in love with trumpets and hybrids last year. That said I did notice all my new trumpets and hybrids leaned last year while my orientals and asiatics have never leaned. I thought maybe it was because these were all new.
4-6 feet in the back would be tall enough.
I did get an e-mail back saying they were fragrant. I will just have to order some to try out.
Just received my Collection of Flugelhorn (Tetra Trumpets) from The Lily Garden. See other comments "Tetra Order". The bulbs are so large and nice. I just finished planting them in containers. I placed them in 5 gallon contains and I think they are too small for that size bulb. After the first year I will place them in the yard.
Nice to know that you are really pleased with this collection. Mine has to go inground but I think they would look really good in a group planting.
Loved each and every Flugelhorn. They grew here last summer and I think I ordered more last fall since I loved them so much. They were amazing lilies. Summer Palace is another one I couldn't say enough good things about. With lilies that nice, of course more is in order (or shall I say on order!).
Rita, I wish I had the energy you do. :)
I have not ordered my bulbs yet. I have been thinking on exactly what would be best were. I now know were I am going to plant the tet Flugelhorns and will not need too many. I want to add to another area in my front yard also but have to go step by stey so will do this first and see were that leaves me.
Ok, I finished up an order for The Lily Garden and just faxed it off now. I did get one of the Flugelhorn Trumpet Collection which is twelve bulbs.
I have not done anything yet about the very front yard were I orginally was asking about planting. I couldn't yet figgure out what to do. This is going to be the back "row" in 4 grouping of 3 in a garden that has nothing, had annuals last year. Then in front staggered also in groups of three some of those Asiatic lankongense hybrids I also ordered.
Oooh, I love those L.langkongense hybrids!
Aren't they lovely? So different looking. I can't wait to see them blooming in my garden.
They have such a graceful, wildflowery look I just love. I planted a few this year and a few last year, looking forward to seeing them develop. And hoping some will have have fragrance inherited from the species.
Oh, me too. I was thinking about purchasing some.
I'll be watching for yours, Rita, and Neal.
Here is this little garden that I started last year. I actually just put the gardenspace in and then ran out of ideas and time so I just planted annuals. In the fall I planted daffodils so at least I have those blooming.
Anyway, in front of the daffs I planted my Flugelhorn Trumpet lilies. I ordered 12 and put them in four groups of three. If you look carefully you can just see the wooden sticks I stuck inground so that I would know were I planted them.
Then in front of that I did another row of lilies four groups of those Asiatic lankongense hybrids. That would be the white markers stuck inground if you can see them. They are spaced infront of and between the tet trumpets.
Then I plan to put cosmos in front of everything to finish off this garden and give constant color.
It's already beautiful, Rita. I can't wait to see it with the lilies blooming.
I think I will order the Fluglehorn collection next year.
I knew I wanted lilies in there from the first as I started that garden. Just couldn't get to it last year. There are also three small Siberian Iris in there that can't be noticed in the picture. Towards the right near the daylilies. They will have to clump up and also grow taller before anyone would notice them.
Does anyone who has grown the flugelhorns have any photos of them? Or know how they're different from regular trumpets?
I have the Flugelhorn Trumpets here. They are tetra trumpet lilies (good for breeding lilies) in pastel colors. Some white, some yellow, some pinks. I have two collections here and got a wide variety of beautiful pastel colors. They are trumpet lilies and look like a trumpet. They are not upfacing.
I know I photographed some of these last summer, so perhaps browsing some of the July photo archives might give you some idea of the looks of them.
They are beautiful.
Please do post pictures if you can find them. We all want to see them :-)) I really think I will want more next year. Will see how it goes. For the area I planted them this year, the 12 worked out perfectly. But I could plant in other areas.
Don't even get me started on the sorry search functions here at DG. In fact, you can't even search forums any more, just a sitewide search. I had already tried searching plant files, sitewide search, etc. and couldn't find any. I even tried searching on Google and Bing, which usually works a lot better than using the search functions here.
Can you tell me where to look, Magnolia? Were they in a post of yours from last July? I'm not finding any in plant files. Other than that, I don't know of anything here called photo archives.
Thanks so much for your reply. I just love trumpet lilies. I don't plan on breeding any though so not sure what the benefit of the flugelhorns would be. Sounds like the colors are very nice.
There are a couple of flugs in this thread as well as many other trumpet lilies:

Once you open the thread, you can use your browser search function to find flugelhorn on the page. that is how I found it. In Firefox it is Control F; don't know about IE, maybe the same.
On the other hand, the Lily Garden catalog has a field photo of them:

Rita, your daffs look beautiful. I really love your grounds with all of the greenery and textures and character :-) Your lilies will be awesome when they come!
I thought that lilies would be perfect in there last year but I just ran out of time and couldn't get to it. So I always planned llilies in that section were I planted them now.
So last fall I figgured at least I could get something going and put in those daffs. I think they turned out really well. Funny part is that they are just a bag of cheep mixed daffs from Home Depot.
I have so many things growing here it's not funny. I have to have at least a hundred shrubs of different kinds, probably lots more. Then the roses, daylilies, lilies, iris and lots of other things.
That and a nice walk down memory lane. Thanks pard.
Thanks, Pardalinum. I had just finished going through versions 9 and 10 of those lily threads from last July when you posted 8. There's one or two of the flugelhorns posted by Magnolia in those as well. Boy, did I enjoy seeing those photos again. There sure are a lot of gorgeous lilies in those threads.
The first photo I looked at was the one on Lily Garden's site. Not a very good photo, though, unlike most of the photos on her site. In fact, I wish every seller had as outstandingly good photos of their lilies as Lily Garden does.
Rita, I think your lilies are going to be wonderful in that bed.
I can't wait for them to grow and bloom :-))
I know. :>) Oh, well, after last winter, it's just nice to look out and see green and anything blooming.
Comparing Flugels this summer should be fun!
I figgured what with getting twelve bulbs I had a good chance of getting a really nice cross section of colors and shades. So I am very interested in seeing what they will actually be once they bloom.
Trumpet lilies seem few and far between anymore, as far as people offering them. I think they often need staking and that deters people from them. They are some of the most wonderful lilies that there are to grow. The shape, the fragrance and the often towering height, not to mention their beautiful color array.
A garden without trumpet lilies is certainly missing something ^_^
I would rather not have things I need to stake but if necessary, I stake things. No reason to do without any fabulous flowers just because you have to tie them to keep them standing well.
I got a nice bag of a dozen assorted trumpet lilies at Costco for around $12 I think. They were nice, fat, healthy looking bulbs too. That's one reason why I was asking for specifics on the flugelhorns, to see whether they were any different from what I already planted this year.
Do any of you live in the DC area? The Potomac Lily Society does a nice sale every fall and they always include some trumpet/aurelians and the prices are good. You have to be able to pick them up at the annual picnic in Arlington, though. Membership is only $4 a year, which has to be one of the best bargains around. I missed ordering any this past fall because of illness in the family.
I LOVE trumpets. I'm so glad I started collecting them before they went "out of fashion" which they are - Tracey's right.
I have Amethyst Temple (White Flower Farm), Emerald Temple (B&D), Silver Sunburst and White Henryi (Old House Gardens). They seem to be the LAST choice of rabbits and voles. The scent is wonderful, they are healthy and they reproduce well. I've been able to gift all four.
I still curse the rabbit that took out my Longidragons (Longiflorum/Black Dragon cross), aka Dragoon. It came from B&D, was shorter, and needed no staking.

It's the one lily I most covet, and have corresponded with Bob and Dianna about it. It's short and fabulously scented, and the picture does not do it justice,It's going to be a while before they can raise enough to offer it. It stopped people guided through the yard in their tracks.
But wow, they were commonplace when I started collecting in 2000. I thought I was a little unsophisticated in loving them, but I didn't care.
