LiseP, RATFOOD is my hero!
Just give the 'maters some time. It's been cool and they don't like cool so well. They pout!
San Antonio - I need your help...
I love how gardening friends help gardening friends on this website!!!
Thanks LiseP! How ya been? I am still going to try to get at least 1 plant of each of those heirloom tomatoes to grow.... You never know what will happen, right? Plus I really really wanna taste one of those Black Krim's. Maybe I need to move up north, eh?? Some of them seedlings I planted tanked and some of them are looking real good (for my first homegrown tomatoes that is) so the jury is still out.
Sadly, I don't think I will even try to grow from seed next year because of this crazy work schedule I have. I had a hard time watering them when they needed and correctly herdening them off. I will probably buy plants for everything except a few peppers that I can't buy as plants. In fact, i'm going to look into timed/drip irrigation for the gardens I have now so they do better than last year. (I may be asking you folks for some advice on that). Maybe i'll get a new jobby job by then, who knows!!!
Anyways, thanks for all the help you folks have given me and I'll talk to you tomorrow!
Oh yeah, Ratfood, I will persist and see what the little seedlings finally do. They are still hanging in there -- and thanks for the encouragement, locakelly! With luck, maybe Ratfood and I will both get a Black Krim yet, or a Cherokee Purple or one of those other fascinating varieties.
One thing they seedlings have already done is to teach me that you do need to pay lots of attention to the little critters! LOL.
Yep, I agree, bobyrd! This website and the people on it are the best.
;o)
I have the best luck with those long days to maturity buggers if I plant them for fall and get them through the winter. Otherwise I have to get them in super early in the spring and hope they set fruit before the heat hits. I have to really really like a tomato to try to bring it through a Phoenix summer - lol...
For what it's worth, the cherry types for me seem to set fruit longer into the heat than regular size maters. Great ones I really like are Black Cherry, Brown Berry and Dr. Carolyn Pink or Yellow. All those are OP to boot!
A two bite cherry type indeterminate climber that set all summer and into Nov for me was the OP Porter tomato. Got seedlings sprouting for it again this year.
I'll have to add that to my list of 'maters to try;o)
If you need seeds? let me know. I have a few to share...
I'd love a few pod. Let me know if there's anything you're looking for as my trade list is barely started - lol.
Update on the Phoenix Tomato trial...
Several DG friends and I trialed this tomato in our gardens here in Phoenix are were rather pleased with it's taste, disease resistance and performance. We are now gearing up to start seeds for spring and would love to get a hold of some of these seeds. I found one online source that is out of stock and you have to buy a minimum 1000 seeds - yikes - don't really think I need that many...
I normally shy away from hybrids - I ♥ my heirloom 'maters - but was so impressed with this one I really want to grow it again. If anyone has any leads as to where I can obtain seeds for this tomato I would be most appreciative! My guess is locally in the San Antonio area may be my best bet...
Thanks a bunch - Kelly
