I won a bid on e bay for searma eggs from a show breeder!!! im so darn excited. I have been admiring all the beautiful searma babies on here and I had to have some. They come from good lines so im hoping they will hatch for me.Im so excited!!! weeeeeeeeeeeeee the parents are all A and B. Any information on incubating them with a medium sized egg would be appreciated.
Thanks
Tina
finally!! I have some searma eggs comming!
Good luck!! Never done it, but I can wave pom-poms...
Which breeder did you buy them from?
I was advised to incubate them on their side...not upright. Also make sure they sit for at least 12 hours before you put them in the incubator.
The chicks are tiny but tough...make sure you grind up their starter for them the first few days and add crumbled egg yolk.
They generally hatch a day or two earlier than other chickens....
I totally agree with Catsy on this inc, and hatching of these little ones. They indeed are tiny but very tuff. I actually grind their chick starter for the first three weeks. And make sure you have enough room in their food bowl for sleeping arrangements. They love to sleep in their toasty warm food. Also I would add that you might want to start them out with a small drown proof waterer, as they are so small and can drown very easily just by falling in. Good luck to you and enjoy. Hay.
so the eggs should sit in the incubator in their sides 12 hours before i start to incubate them? I also won some salmon Favoerolles eggs.I guess they are a small to medium size egg.I want to incubate them together but i was worried about the temprature diffrences for the egg tops.Ya think they will be ok incubated together?
Thanks for the cheers and pom poms grow!!!
and thanks for all the info cats and hay.

The breeder they came from is named Marilyn.A few of her hens are from david Stroud and the rest of her starter birds came from Jerry Schexnayder. She Recomended i join the SCNA.She is the district rep for her area. She is in Winthrop, Minnesota.Do you guys know of her?Im just so excited the roos on th ad were just beautiful.
They should be fine together...the Serama will be a little lower--but I don't think they require quite as high a temp. I've hatched several mixed incubations and often the Serama hatched the best.
You don't need to let them rest in the incubator. They can sit in a carton outside the incubator. You will be heating and stabilising the incubator for a couple days before you put the eggs in, so they really can't be in the incubator until you are ready to incubate them. Letting them sit for 12 hours helps stabilise the air cell which can be disrupted, sometimes fatally, during shipping. The larger end of the egg will naturally be slightly higher than the smaller when the egg is on its side. That is what you want, because the air cell is at the larger end.
My Salmon Faverolle eggs were on the small size...but close to medium. They are very sweet birds.
I haven't heard of your breeder--but I don't know that many. Jerry is pretty famous though.

I already have 2 incubators going with eggs from here.Im gonna be sitting with a huge smile in a pile of chicks, ducklings and goslings soon.
Congrats She_Wolfie! I know your excitement well.
That did it.......... I'm off to ebay!
She Wolfie, easy on the excitment ok, ZZ's can't take it, We are trying to stabilize her so ease up ok...LOL. Poor Hubby, I can understand his dilema. Hay
weeeeeee the post office called! there here there here omg where are my shoes!
LOL Haystack!!!
She_Wolfie I am so happy for you... wait till they hatch.. they are about the size of a large bumble bee!! You will be so in love there will be no hope for you either... You may think I've got it bad.. Just wait.. LOL
The excitement does come through on these posts! I know it well and am really enjoying it through you. :)
Now.. go candle them and don't stare a hole in em!! Best of luck to ya.
They all got here fine not a broken egg out of eather package. They are resting on their sides tonight and tomorrow will go into the incubator. We worked all day doing well needed spring cleaning in the chicken building.lots more to get done before we are ready to start building more flights in there.looks like we will put in 5 or 6 more.We live in illinois so im wondering do you think i will need to make a little house in their flight with a heat lamp for winter for the searmas? The building gets cold but its not real drafty and there will be(when we are done) at least 8 flights 8'Lx4'Wx8'tall all down the length of one side and at least 4 flights 8'x8'x8' all down the length of the other side.My pot belly pigs and a few rabbits live in that building also.I was thinking with so many in there it should take the worst of the chill out in mid wainter.I know im babbling hehehe im tired and i want my lil searmas(if they hatch) to be comfortable here in illinois.
Seramas here in northern California do not need supplemental heat. My outdoor ones seem stronger than the ones I keep in the house.
But Illinois is another matter. I would definitely plan on some supplemental heat...you might only need it in the coldest weather, but I wouldn't risk not having it. Some Serama are very, very small and have little body mass.
Did you candle them She_wolfie? I'm thrilled for you that they are okay! I usually candle right away to find the ones with multiple bubbles.
Thankz to Catsy, she saved me from Ebay! I have eggs for the bator!!
edited for name correction... sorry I don't know how a random name like that popped in my head.

UMMM Just what is multiple bubbles ZZ??
They are called TACs.. (Trans Air Cell) when they got what some call "scrambled" during shipping. When your eggs arrive, if you candle them before you put them in the bator, it will probably help you to know which ones are "iffy" and which are good. They will have multiple air cells or bubbles that move when you tip the egg...
I've never had a TAC develop or hatch.. I think Catsy has, but not me. I stopped even trying with them... never bother to put them in the bator. I've tried letting them rest an extra day or so, with no luck.
Shipped Serama eggs are famous for it.. that's usually the hatch rate is so low.. along with their small size and being sensitive to temp changes. They just don't ship well. I have also gotten several shipments I didn't even bother to incubate... I knew they were no good.
I hope your eggs were okay.
I dont have a candler made yet and to be honest im not even sure i could tell .i just put them in.I will get a candler made this week hopfully and try at day 6.I won a bid for 6 eggs she sent me a dozen so hopefully some will hatch. There is only one she marked it said (white 3 or whitey 3)kinda hard to read it but its the only one marked so im thinking its something special.
I had chick envy so bad i went absoulty nuts on e bay. lol im gonna need a 4th incubator now.I won seramas, salmon favoerolles, courtnix quail, button quail, araucanas and last but certanly not least mandarin ducks eggs.Im done now. lol if i dont quit i will have to turn the morton building into my chicken building.I already have other breeds comming as chicks also.I have decided tho that my husband is an enabler. He pushed for the quail and the ducks.
Can you incubate duck eggs with chicken eggs?
I don't think so, the hatching times are different.
I think the Rh is different for ducks too?
Cool 4 you Wolfie.. Gonna have to set up a hatcher!
You can use a mag light to candle. You don't need a candler.. You will know a TAC right away.. turn the egg slightly and if the air cell moves, bingo.
You got it bad Wolfie! So wonderful to have a hubby enabler!!! Congrats!
I started some duck eggs in with my chicken eggs but by the time there almost done i will have another incubator freed up to put the duck eggs in to finsih them.I did hatch chicken and goose eggs together last 2 years tho.I dident know any better and i had a pretty good hatch on both.
The mandarin eggs wont be comming until like april or may by then i will have an incubator just for them.I am also considering putting them under a broody hen.Its really a tough choice on them as they are so expensive and i guess a little tricky to hatch.any info would be great! mabie i will start a thread on them.
Any news yet? When are these due?? Am I guessing right? LOL Hatching withdrawl here.. need photos!!
Comon SHE: The suspense is killing us, I'm doing a little better than ZZ's, but thats to be expected...LOL. Haystack
SHE - you will be happy with David Strouds eggs, I have hatched many eggs from him and have been pleased with the results. Good luck- they must be hatching today?
OMG there are Serama eggs I haven't hatched yet???? Where is he.. Let me at em! LOL
I never did send you any eggs did I? Let me know when you want some - my Sportsman incubator is jammed up and I have plenty of extras for hatching!
Oh no Scott, I was just kidding.. I'm up to my eyeballs in eggs & babiez right now.. But Thank you for the offer!
Take the eggs, ZZ!
im so bummed. none of the seramas hatched but the salmon faverolles that were in the same incubator are hatching just fine.I dont get it :0( so now i have to go on a serama quest. I will find a breeder within driving distance and go get some babies!!
There is one somewhere in Missouri called Ozark Hills Poultry. I found it when i was looking for one. I do not know anything about them. Its just a place close by that sells them. Still probably several hours from you.
I will look that up.Im determined to have some tiny lil seramas a couple hour deive is nothing compaired to the 23 days i have been waiting already. ty so much grey
Shipped Seramas are notorious for not hatching well. They really are not any harder to hatch if they are not shipped. And the chicks are sturdy even though they are so small.
I am sure once you get some decent eggs you will have tons of little Serama running around.
I did find the Salmon Faverolle chicks to be a little delicate.
I'm thinking this place is probably a 6 hour drive.. but that's just a guess.. :)
So sorry She: May I ask how many serama eggs you had in the incubator? Hay
ok so here is my plan.I have been doing my Serama homework and have found that a class C will produce A and B chicks also. My husband knew how badly i wanted them so he told me to buy a C class pair from Jerry. I figure someday i will be able to talk catsy,ZZ, Hey or someone into selling me some chicks or an adult pair or so so i can add more genes.Well im hoping anyway. (giggle) I can grovel and beg.Im not too proud when it comes to these lil cuties.I found the web page for ozark poultry but there is zero contact info for her on the page.
Catsy can ya tell me what ya found with the salmon faverolles? If i keep them warm and dont put them into a flight until they are fully featherd do ya think thats enough? They will not be in with any other breed. All info is so appreciated.Im still trying to join the scna but so far my compuer is not compatable with their page for e mail it wont accept my e mail application so im going to get the e mail info from jerry when i place this order for a pair.
Hey,
I had a dozen Serama eggs in the incubator. I put them in the same time as the faverolles.the favs are hatching now the serama eggs are still in the hatcher just in case there is a small chance one might hatch.I pulled the serama eggs at 17 days and put them in the hatcher. It looks like 6 were good all dark inside but nothing not even a pip.
