Garden Projects Two - 2010

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Coming from here - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1070648/ - that last thread was getting long.

Here is a bird house i built yesterday based on a post Joann did a while back. The only difference is i added a chimney and used some hlws clipping for "smoke". Yes the birds are keeping warm until spring!

Wha, Dang, that is brilliant. And very artistic too. Patti

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

That is very nice work. There will be some happy birds around your neighborhood. I would say it was cute but we have been down that road before. ^_^
This site is going kinda slow today off and on. Maybe the mad rush before they shut down this afternoon for a few hours.

Ge1836, I want to see what Wha ripped off from you. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

jen my wife said that's nice - put at the end of the driveway and sell it:) no way

patti i do not have a lot of luck with roses:(

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Did she really say that?!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

the harry looks great up there Bill... good job!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Dumb bird question - will having a birdhouse with a certain size opening attract birds that would not otherwise visit your garden or feeder??

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Excellent, Bill!!! I love it.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

can we get ours together???.. they would look good!!

onewish1, Wha's might be a tad tall for your gal. Ptti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

victor yes she did - guess this being out of work has got her thinking i could make a living selling them - no way, i make too many mistakes mostly because i do not have building plans just do them in my head, although that one is pretty easy - struggling with a roof on another one right now, lots of angles that i have to free cut on the table saw, tough to keep the edges straight and it is trial and error if i figured out the length/width/angles correctly - have just enough wood left if i do not mess up.

thx harper - allison i might have to make a little love shack here only i would keep the hole round and cut heart out of wood and tack/glue it on, i've have a picture of one similiar to yours for a couple of years.

and yes victor different size holes attract different birds - i usually make 1 1/2 inch holes which blue birds like - for this one it is a 2" hole only because it fits the size of the house better - will need to check what birds prefer that size.

I have several bird house/boxes up in trees around the wet lands for flickers and wood ducks - can only put those up in the winter when it is iced over - last time i put them up during a heavy snow - it surprises the neighbors - i've got many how the heck did someone get that there?

Thomaston, CT

Way cool, Bill! I had the plans for a screech owl box about 10 years ago---DH was going to make it---lost the plans, never found ones as simple, DH never let me forget it---just brought it up a few weeks ago! And Bill----buy a Carefree Celebration rose----no spraying, lives to zone 4, apricot blooms, dark green & purple foliage, a nice scent---I have 2---may buy more!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx robin - i have some carefree roses - is the celebration a climber?

need to get more wood:) got two sides done perfectly the other two still working on the dimensions - would have needed more anyway as i did not have enough to finish as it turns out.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

the second bird house is built - it is a four room square house with the roof at 45 degrees - have decided to cedar shingle the roof - need to keep those birds dry!

photo to follow

Hope they have good credit before you offer the mortgage.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Where is mine. Do I talk to your DW? Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

good point victor - only blue birds with a full time job:)

did patti say something?

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, Just leave it at the end of the drive with a cash jar. I'll be there to get it. Patti

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

can't wait to see the new one!!!.. I know I have said it before.. the talent in this forum amazes me

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I never see bluebirds here. If I had a house for them, would they show up? (Sounds like my MIL.)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

they need an open field

jar? there is a barrel out there:)

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Bill, that is fantastic!!! I can't wait to see the 4-room model! You have an incredible range of creative ideas that you are fortunate enough to be able to build or make. I love to see what you come up with!

Did Hank show you the wood duck boxes he put up down at the cabin in the pond? He, too, had to put them on the trees or stumps after the pond had frozen years ago before we retired. Now he has to put on hip boots to clean them out each fall.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

You would deserve a barrel full as I am sure the new one is as nice as the first. I am busy throwing and glazing flower pots, I might try to do a bunch for you as a swap, if they are good enough. I will talk to your DW. I will have a new batch in two weeks. Here are some of my new flower pots now filled with Hippeastrums and bowls and platters. Better ones coming, but it has been 40 years since I played in the clay. I started again in Oct. Love doing it. Patti

Very nice, Patti! How large can you do? I'm still looking for a good size 'oil jar' type for a fountain.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

VERY lovely, Patti! More talent exposed!!! I love the colors! I really like them all, but the colors in the bowl on the bottom right are my favorite.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

wow impressive Patti... would love to learn how to do that

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Oh! Those are so beautiful Patti! I would love to own any one of them^_^ Don't see how they could be any better!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Love your glazes Patti, I would love to have a wheel again, but that would mean a kiln, and that would mean a.......... Oh, you know what I mean, LOL Beautiful work no less. Ric

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I am on your page Holly
I miss the studio.
Those are great Patti.Do you formulate your own glazes?
If so watch out for the Barium and copper carbonate ones. They are good for decoration but not good foe serving and cooking pieces.
If you use comercial glazes they are OK.Not to panic.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Just shoot me now.
Guess what I found in a file of no relationship
The worst thin is the "Search" turned up nothing even tho the file name is Birdhouse and thats what I asked for.
