Hey Sista Lynn and Jan!!! Thought I would take a break and lurk around to see what is going on. I am seeing some beauties on here!!! Another trip, Jan??? You are travelin', Girl!!! Glad to see it. I just got a new A.V. the other day but can't find words to describe it...Beyond gorgeous and I got a few baby streps too. Can't wait for them to grow and bloom so I can show everyone. Got them from someone very special :) I also got some seed from another very special gal a little while back and I see a couple of T-tiny shoots coming up. I am thrilled!!! I wish these leaves would hurry and grow some mouse ears so I can share GRR!!! I went tugged the leaves and tapped to pots the other day. Told 'em they better be doing somethin' 'cause they are takin' up room! Do you think that helped any? HA!! Tell Sista Susan I said "Hey"!

Love Ya!!!

Warm Hugs :)

Connie

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

Hey Sista' Connie,
So glad to see you back...even for a little while.I talked to Susan for quite awhile today and she's doing great and waiting for Jan to come down (so she can put her to work).
Jan,you aren't allowed to read that LOL ^_^.

Sometimes letting them little baby plants know who's boss helps LOLOL.Can't hurt......but maybe you can play them some nice music.......but be careful....some like R and R,some like Rap,some like Country,etc.........the little buggers can be particular!!

Hugs,Lynn

phoebesviolets, I know that both #1 and #2 that I post are Optimara brand and I went on Optimara's website to see if I could ID them but so far the closest one that I've found that matches her is "Rita" - http://www.optimara.com/optimarafieldguide/varietiesm-z/rita.html

The only thing is that The bloom for "Rita" says that it's a single and the blooms on mine are semi-double or double. I've looked at the other similar blooms but they are either too light with the wrong petal type or have the dark pink/rose color on all petals. So, I'm unsure and will have to say she's a NOID. #2 is either "Margit" or "Wyoming". I can't really tell as the pictures make them look all the same really and the bloom shape is star so it's a very common color for a violet in my opinion. At least of violets available from chain stores with a small floral/nursery department.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

I am a big fan of once a noid--always a noid. Genetics being what they are, and given environmental differences, it is hard to nail down which is what, with any assurance of accuracy. That said, have you looked at Harster Greenhouses? They are the Canadian equivalent to Optimara, and export to the retail chains in the US. http://www.harstergreenhouses.com/ Whatever it is--it is still very pretty ^_^

Cocoa, FL(Zone 9a)

Thank you, no I haven't looked at their violets but have been looking around at a few places who specialize in AVs and Gesneriads. So far my list of wants for the different AVs keeps getting longer and longer.

As for my AV "Rita" look alike, all I know is that it came with the Optimara ID stick, but as I said Optimara does not put the names of their differnt AVs on the sticks, so as far as I know it could be something totally different and I wouldn't have a clue...LOL

I'll definitely check harstar out and maybe I can have a few leaves/plants shipped to me from them. I was looking at a AV nursery online last night that is based out of New York - www.lyndonlyon.com . Their prices are on the expensive side so I'm not entirely sure if I could afford to order from them. They are asking $2.25 for 2 leaves or $6.00 and up for plants. I even saw one that they are trying to sell for $10, which is way too rich for my blood considering that I'd also have to pay over $20 for shipping. Either way, I am in search of different AV varieties and am trying to get a wish list created in my journal area on here, but I fear it will be a very long list for each of the AV varieties....lol

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Post your list on the 'wants and haves' thread on this forum. People here are very generous.

SilverTigris,Theres many AV clubs/shows in Fl,have you thought of joining one if theres one in your area? That would a great way to add to your collection. Jan

Cocoa, FL(Zone 9a)

Thank you for the information Jan.

I've looked for an AV club in my area but have not found one that I would be able to join. All that I've found so far are over 40 miles away from my home and would take me more than 2 hours just to be able to go to a club meeting. If anyone knows of any in Brevard County, FL (cities of Cocoa, Titusville, Melbourne, Cocoa Beach, Palm Bay, Indiatlantic, Sebastion, Mims, Port Saint John, and any other towns/cities) I would greatly appreciate the information. :)

Of course, I guess I could start a club for my county but that may take some time to do since I do not have the knowledge to be able to start a club.

That's to bad the clubs are too far away from you SilverTigris.I have the same problem in my area also.Maybe you could watch the AVAS website for shows/sales,it might be worth the 2 hour trip to go to one.I know the clubs sales tables are usally cheaper than the vendors.Plus you get to see the show plants!

This site lists a place in Melbourne.

jannich,

Very true, I'll definitely be keeping my eyes open for the shows and who knows I may just find that starting my own club for people who are in my county isn't as bad as I think. However, I'll definitely want to poll people from my area before I decide to do anything. Then if there are enough people in my area with the same interest start getting together with them and finding out how we need to proceed from there by viewing the regulations/rules from AVSA and of course our regional representative societies as well. It's something you too could possibly do as well for your area as you may find there are more people than you thought with the same interest in AVs :)

(Lynn) Omaha, NE(Zone 5a)

I will try and post a few pictures in the next few days of what I have blooming and some of the pictures I took at the local AVS and Gessie Society show.

Silver Tigris your pink one is beautiful. i love pink and doule.
Where is Cocoa FL. I am in sarasota Fl. we seem to have a club in meets in Nokomis. Have to check it out.Helene

Cocoa, FL(Zone 9a)

Thank you Helene (such a beautiful name and was my grandmother's name), Cocoa, FL is located about 15 minutes away from Kennedy Space Center and 10 minutes away from Cape Canaveral,FL home to Port Canaveral/Canaveral Air Station and Cocoa Beach,FL on the central east coast of Florida in Brevard County. I am about 164 miles northeast of where you live in Sarasota. Otherwise, I would love to be able to go to your club in Nokomis but fear that it's a very long way away from my home.

Lynn,

I thought I had found the link to the Space Coast African Violet Club but when I tried to find the information again to post for others in my area I could not find the link again. Thank you for searching I am very grateful for the information. I did checked to see if they are affiliated with the AVSA and they do not seem to be affiliated but of course they may be in the process of becoming registered with the AVSA and just have not yet been approved. Anyway, at least it is a group I can check out and become a member of and that will hopefully be full of many wonderful people. I plan to go to their next meeting which will be next weekend (April 3rd) at 1:30 p.m. so we'll see how things turn out.

Is this where you meant?

Space Coast African Violet Club: First Saturday, 1:30 p.m. Melbourne Beach Public Library, 324 Ocean Ave., Melbourne Beach.

Kittrell, NC(Zone 7b)

Lynn, I really hope that you find a club close by. I am in the same fix you are. I know that there's one in Raleigh but their meetings are at night and I don't drive after dark......getting old I guess.
John, that sure is a beauty, now just tell me how you took that picture.
I have been playing around with this camera all morning. These are the best I can do, still a long shot from being as good as all of yours. Still fuzzy in some. Colors are more true than before. I guess that I am still going to have to take some classes.
