2010 Seed starting in the MA group

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I brought a little tray of petunia seedlings and another of vinca seedlings up on the deck this afternoon and proceeded to transplant them to a flat of cell-packs. When I was done, I saw one little seedling in the flat that didn't look like the others -- how did a baby basil plant get into the mix? LOL

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

They should be coming to the swap with us Onewish. If I can keep them going. I just loved those last year. Maybe we can trade some coleus, too.
Nice Critter. One of those flats is for Jane and it has wave petunias in it. They look so nice I was sorry I didn't get any. Well I know Jane will share. LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh sure Holly... I have lots of cuttings & seedlings.. I will make a list.. 1/2 of the cuttings I don't know names of.. so I will take photos.. LOL

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Started some 'maters, peppers, okra, Castor bean, 4 basils, chives, and 2 parsley this morning. Have a ton of flowers to start yet. Ric

Started my tomatoes, "orangey-red" Zinnias from the seed swap and Mexican Sunflower seeds. Separated Digitalis Candy Mountain seedlings.
I think I will have to resow some Lemon/Lime Basil, the seeds I saved did not gerninate, I have some older seeds from Jill left, I'll try those.

Ric, my parsley I sowed and planted in the ground last year is coming back up. I plant the flat leaf verity (easier to clean). I had some in a pot outside all winter but it looks dead.

NORTH CENTRAL, PA(Zone 5a)

Just potted up six minature dahlias. There was no root and there was no cutting. Interesting. They arrived as plugs. There was a root mass in the plug and a bit more than two inches of top growth. This may be my first look at celular probagation. They were certified organic. They were very well packed two in a hard shell clear plastic minni greenhouse. The whole deal was excellent. I shall grow them inside for a month to get them going good.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

My begonias are telling me they want planted. They are sending out green shoots. I have them laying open in a pot. Better get them in soil. I stored my cannas in Josh's basement and we loaded them in the explorer to bring home today. Hope you all are having a great Easter.

Holly,

I have several Blushing Susies coming up on tiny trellises. I have only one passi seedling that I hope makes it to a decent size. Only one of all that I put under lights!! I also have some Japanese Morning Glories which supposedly stay open all day and am having no luck with a Chilean Bell Flower Vine.

HAD TO show you all this little rooted cutting of a Thanksgiving cactus----no more than a couple of leaf segments---
IN BLOOM!

SO cute! and it is pink! Probably picked up a broken off piece at work.....(HD)....

Good grief, I think that bloom is bigger than that little plant! I have one that was rooted from a piece rescued off the floor at DPF, growing well for the past year or so, but no blooms yet. :-)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that is too cute!!

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Lovely to look at, Gita.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

is this what is called "floor-al" propagation?

I've already lost one small pot of snapdragon seedlings to 'drought' but have another. It can be a challenge caring for all the babies!

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

Thanks all--Yes--it IS cute!

I have many others rooting--all different sizes--that are not in bloom--but are growing..
This little segment must have been at just the right stage of "about-to-flower" and rooted quickly..

Sally--YES! It is getting rather "overwhelming" as all my seedlings are growing...all at different rates.
Gonna pot up my Tomatoes today to 4" pots (Good grief! I just did them in deep cell-packs a week ago!) and, while this weather holds up--I am just going to leave them outside in part sun.
Took all my Coleus cuttings out 3 days ago. They are sitting on my front steps in shade--day and night....

Gonna pot up my Daturas today as well--in 4" pots....Maybe also my Italian Basil--at least into a cell-pack. They are so much smaller.
Gotta do something about my 3 Tomatillos--they are way too big by now to sit under the lights....
My 2 Hyacinth Beans are already sitting out back on my Patio table--they are about 8" tall by now....Have 2 others sprouting....

Gonna be in the low 80's Tuesday and Wednesday.....I sure hope Mother Nature is not a big tease this year! She walloped us with the Winter we had---Have mercy!!!

Here's my Tomatoes....all I have seeded....

Here's the Purple Daturas. The Yellow ones are a bit more behind....sprouted later as well...

Here are the 3 Basils---L&L, Thai and Italian.

The purple ones on the right are a low, ornamental pepper (from Jill at the Swap).

My 2 Hyacinth beans....that are outside.
The other 2 are still under lights--as they were later replacements for 2 that did not "take" with the first sowing.

Last one-----
My Tahiti daffs are just now opening.....
I really need 2 more bulbs to complete the circle.....

Gita your toms look wonderful... where did you get the white cell packs.. they look just the right size for the bloom masters

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

I fished those trays out of the trash can a few years ago at MD Flower and Foliage....
I asked first......:o) If you have a grower nearby--go see what they are throwing away....

Wish I could get more--but I seldom go there this early....By now it would be way too late....
I COULD drop by--they are only 15 min. from my house....

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

if you happen to be around there.. ::::cheesy grin:::: the shape of them looks perfect... well I might just have to break down & buy more plugs from parks.... those packs are the same as yours

I think I killed all my centaurea cyanus when I transplanted them to a larger pot!!!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Anybody who is nearby (or can wait for a swap date), I have extra 48 cell and deep 36 cell sheet pots (that fit into 1020 flats)... I got tired of paying increasing prices locally, trying to catch them in stock, etc... so I ordered them by the case a year or two ago so that I'd have plenty for the next few years! LOL

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I would take some off your hands if we were closer Critter

Baltimore, MD(Zone 7a)

"Meyer Seed Co. International" sells those "sheet cell-trays"--all kinds....
I don't know the prices--but they can't be all that much. I have NO idea!

Besides--IF Tony is there when i go--he always (automatically) gives me the discounted price--b/c he remembers shopping at my HD years ago and how helpful i always was to him..

Maybe i can go there ans take some pictures? Then--if anyone really wants them--I can bring them to Bec's Swap.

Been transplanting annual seedlings all day, about 735, (Yes Allison, 222 of those were Sweet Cream Marigolds),and up sizing plugs, about 70. Now I can catch my breath, and plant some more seeds before up sizing almost 700 plugs.I really need my greenhouse. Also got my pieris planted, cleaned up in front of the veggie garden, and helped Holly with some litter from the beds she worked on. Ric

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that is a lot of marigolds!!!

I keep working on Randy to make one of my beds bigger... think I finally talked him into it

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Gita, your purpl Dats are a little ahead of mine. I'm going to put mine out of the warm shady deck for two days thoguh or till the cool comes back. I have one Yellow Datura that came up in two weeks and has been hogging the whole 4 inch pot, getting big. Now the rest of the seeds decided to sprout yesterday. TOo late. Purples in two inch pots

Near right corner, tiny things called Laurentia that ladygardener shared. so cute, see those little toothed leaves? As in "Grrr, watch out, I'm gonna get you" from a tiny kitten.
Snapdragons, basil, buttr daisies(Mealmpodium), S African Foxglove from Gita, one lonely survivor of Evening Stock.

shoot I forgot to start my basil & rosemary... is it too late?

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

my basil is only a week old anyway, it came up fast. I think you're good.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

whew.. good

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

My brother (in Pittsburgh) just direct-seeds his basil (in window box planters) after danger of frost. I can never wait to start picking and cooking with it, so I have to start mine ahead of time.. I am already looking at those seedlings, looking forward to the time I can pinch (and eat!) their little tops!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

LOL.. I know the feeling

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)
