Tropical Garden #67

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes! had breakfast outside on the 11th st. cafe deck this morning, and almost finished power washing deck by living room. I'm sorry this place is going to be very torn up during spring shopping. such is life, you'll never see it so ugly again hopefully.

You'll get it back. Probably even better than before as you have learned so much more.

Had Juan and the crew here this morning for the first time since the end of October. Amazing how much better it looks already. Looonnnggg way to go yet.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I want a Juan and crew to help...yep, that was big ol whine. Oh wait, I have Brian, yes I informed him at breakfast today that he is assigned to garden clean up duties.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Are you sure you want to do that (turn Brian loose)--you may not have a plant left. LOL

Dandridge, TN(Zone 6a)

Thanks Prita,
Yep, the height of the greenhouse is due to a miscalculation on my part- to increase the side walls to eight ft. Then the spot in the yard that we thought was level wasn't, so we had to build a base. That made it even higher!
I think the gh is bigger than our house, lol.

I'm a certified plant nut, I like anything odd or different. I like cactus and succulents, and caudiciform plants, tropicals like EEs and plumerias, bananas, citrus, clivia, callas of course, agaves, and brugmansias. None of that may be odd or different to you in the tropics, but they can't be grown outdoors here.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I worked at the Garden show today all day, and didn't take my camera/bad me. The Orchid society has a wonderful selection of Orchids, and Hongs has a wonderful Garden display, will post pictures tommorrow. Found a large staghorn fern thing, 25.00 It is really big. I am going to see if I have some money stashed somewhere ( I normally find sme hidden away) I have to have that plant. Anyway.. Love all the blooms and plants posted here, and If I had a Greenhouse, I would never be on here, that is for sure. Hibs are budded, have three morning glorys budding again, and the red star hibiscus and the red lantana are battling who can show off the most. Brugs are going to be early bloomers at the rate they are going here .. it was up to almost 60, too bad I didn't get outside tho.

RJ, a clean canvass.. I am envious of you..
there are alot of cool anthuriums and tropicals at the garden Show, but still nothing compared to what Tropicman here in wichita grows.. he came by the space where I worked at.. he has been busy.
Rita what is the plant in the post ending in 728?

This picture is from last summer, grown from seed, I have a bunch of babies up I planted downstairs from the pods here..

Well, I'll start off the guessing game and we'll see who gets it right. I think it's (...728) some type of Hippeastrum. :O)

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL, that made me laugh Patty, but this is the best time to let him loose, as there are already no plants left!

I vote with Tropic. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=7604728

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Well in that case, RJ, your right then. Go ahead and send him my way when he's done with your mess. LOL I've still got a mess of dead vines that need cleaning. I'm wondering if I should get a chain saw on them especially my purple allamanda vine in the back bed. Some of the branches are really thick.

LOL, all of those guys did well and are popping up now...
guess what..your favorite pink mini azaleas are blooming...so are the pink magnolias.
Yes, I have more old vines to pull down this weekend, and dead trees.

So, question...if the trunk of a tropical like jacaranda bleeds...is it safe to say it died? it looks dead ..and will test the brittleness of the tops...but it's garden waste pick up monday, and I intend all of it to exit the garden that isn't alive.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

Well snatch a picture of those pink mini's and post it so I can get my pink fix. LOL While your pulling your dead vines, scoot down to South Texas and do mine too. Please (I said please now.) hahahahaha

Sunshinesw, Happy Birthday!!

joeswife, I am not positive but I think that the guys were correct when they identified the 728 post as a Hippeastrum 'Night Star'.

Oh thank you! I feel better now. It amazes me that the pink magnolia has those blooms but not a single stitch of green.

I may have to steal that azalea--covet, covet!!!!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL, you say that every year! I always keep a look out for mini azaleas..they are difficult to find..I love them because they have a long bloom period.
When your on Fannin..check out all the flower shops, this is the time of year that minzeleas might be there.

A vine that is still alive--YEAH. I am not sure if any of my vines survived this winter.

Desoto, TX(Zone 8a)

After being buried under the snow for a week, the clematis is putting out new growth. YAY!

Looks like it's starting to thaw out over there. Won't be long and it will all be a blaze of colours. :O)

My Typhonium lindleyanum is flowering again. It tends to put them out throughout the wet season. I cut them off when they're spent to avoid getting seed. The last time I let them go I couldn't give away most of the seedlings.

The Heliconias are also blooming (and coming up through my lawns).

These Caladiums are losing their whiteness as the green spreads out from the leaf veins. At the start of the wet season they're very white.

Another of my Caladiums.

A couple of Zamia furfuracea along my driveway.

A real hardy type of fern also along my driveway. Survives the long hot dry season without water, although looks worse for wear. But come the wet season it's back looking great. I've another one that looks the same but is much taller. And another again that's slightly more slender. Not to mention another one that seems to prefer sitting up in trees.

My 'baby' Bismarckia noblis Silver form, I've 3 of them along my driveway, all about that same size.

I've got a lot of Tamarinds along the front (about 30) that make a good screen from the road. Helps cut down on the dust. There's about another 20 along the driveway, but they're mixed in with other trees, etc., so don't grow so densely.

My large bamboo, don't know the name/species. The culms are about 80 to 90mm in diameter. But useless for doing anything with, splits as soon as it dries out. Looks nice laying down on the ground and looking up at it.
