I bought this oak tree at a native plant sale last fall and think it might make a nice informal upright. I am not very skilled with bonsai technique and am pretty lazy about learning to wire etc. I have played around with a few plants with mixed results. How should I proceed with this little plant? I want to widen the base a little and develop the above ground roots (term escapes me right now, starts with an N?). I am also wondering about branch trimming too. I never seem to get the right balance or the right branches cut properly. Any advice would be appreciated.

FWIW - I would sever the trunk immediately above the bar branches, training the bar branch at the left (top picture) more vertically as the new leader. The bar branch on the right would be pruned only slightly and the lower branch allowed to grow without pruning to strengthen it as the 1st primary. These steps will establish some taper in the trunk & two primary (or 1 primary and one back) branches. This is only the case if the root flare is just under the surface. If you have several inches of trunk buried before the root flare, you'll need to rethink.
Repot the tree in a large container in appropriate soil or plant in the ground to be lifted later, either after reducing the tap root so you'll eventually be able to get the tree in a bonsai pot.

Will it survive the tap root pruning easily? I haven't taken it out of the pot to see what its roots are like. What gage wire should be used to train the left branch into place? The widest part of the trunk is probably 3/4 inches.

I just looked at where you are from. I am from Dearborn Hts. MI, been in TX 6 years now. I still miss home.
