Can anyone tell me what this spider is that turned up in our garden in Melbourne please? The body is about 2cm across and is quite dome-shaped. The white stripe is very distinctive.

This is an orb weaving spider (family Araneidae); it might be an Eriophora sp. - see http://tinyurl.com/y8fv2df for an example. All orb weavers are harmless to humans.

There is usually no white central stripe, but here is one of my pictures showing the white stripe
