Found some bulbs I forgot I bought=)

Greensboro, NC(Zone 7a)

So, I was digging out a box of garden stuff and found 5 baggies of small bulbs I bought in the fall. Only onesies or twosies and a small baggie of bulbils.

The aren't dried out or rotted--some have moist "soil" in the bags one (the bulbils) the soil is fairly dry but the bulbils are still alive.

Recommendations? I can pot them up (4" cowpots?) and put in 1 gal ziplock bags, or toss them into one of the WS containers I've made and put them outside. Not sure what to do. Like most of the country we're actually having some colder temps and occasional snowfall. Any advice welcome!

If the type of lily would make differences in how to proceed...they are:

Hiawatha
Iowa Rose
Hansonii hybrid
and
White Flash

I have to go look through my purchase lists and see who and where I got these from for more info.

Sounds like a Faraway Flowers list to me.

If you pot them up, keep them on the dry side, lilies don't like to be too wet.

I think you're right...it was some sort of Classified Ad I think for small bulbs if I'm not mistaken! Thanks!!

So it should be safe to set them outside then? Maybe set the pots close up against the brick building under the eaves?

Thanks for the reminder and the advice!

When I have started them this time of year, I hold them in under lights to get started, but my temps are most certainly colder than yours. Late March, early April here they do fine as the temps are generally warmer and it places them in their more natural cycle and they have done fine in pots on my deck, until I either decide to plant them out or to remain in the large pot all season to then be planted out in the fall.

Perhaps someone in your zone or a similar climate will have an experience with this. Let's hope someone chimes in here.

Yeah, the temps here are colder than normal for us lately (last 5 years or so have been oddly temperate). Still our lows at night are not much lower than 28 or so and lately highs have been 48-55 during the day.

I've already got daffodils popping up foliage so I guess everything is on Mother Nature's schedule:lol:

I do appreciate the advice though and will get them potted up and see where to go from there:)

If those temps are consistent, as long as the lilies aren't sprouted, experience tells me they will be fine out there in pots. For me it would be two months to wait.

Last December I ordered some bulbs and they were delivered Christmas week when I was busy wrapping so they stayed on the cool steps to the unfinished attic and I finally got them potted up (along with the zillion extras that the company sent) and are in the garage up against the kitchen wall. I'm hoping for the best. None had sprouted so they should be fine.

I also potted a late delivery but watered them.Just checked them and changed the newspaper insulation in the box.
I noticed the top of the soil of 1 pot was cracking.I hope its because he pot is dry and not that the bulb is sprouting. Its 2 months too early.

Could it be that it's too dry at the top? You'll know if you see a sprout.

My experience comes with running out of room in the fridge and having to punt, so to speak, for early arriving bulbs. Glad to help. Let us know what you decide to do and how it works out for you ^_^

I also found some bulbs!!! I bought 2 packs last fall on clearance. Didn't know I needed to keep them cool!

The package says: Lily - Oriental Mix.

They have been in a drawer in my house all winter.

I have a greenhouse -- should I go ahead and take them out there? Should I plant them? Should I trash them?

I'm in Tennessee and the weather is going to be warm for the next week (40's-50's) -- so my greenhouse will be about 60's-70's.

Can anyone help?

If it were my choice and my bulbs I'd plant them. Good luck.

If they look or smell rotten or if they're mushy soft then I probably wouldn't.

absolutly plant them ,nothing to loose.

Thank you!

If they are orientals, they need to have a cold period in order for them to bloom. If they were "precooled" then you'll see growth and bloom if the bulbs are in good shape still, but if not, they won't do anything until next year.

I bought a bag of Orientals the end of Jan. and threw them in the fridge. The bag didn't say if they were pre chilled, or not. They're going in the ground soon, as I have lilys comming up now. I know they are supposed to be chilled longer, but.....

I opened up the bag
Looks like little white spikes coming out from them. I think i'm gonna plant them in pots and sit in my greenhouse.

That's terrific news. I hope you love the lilies.
