haggle shop finds

Kingsport, TN(Zone 6b)

After reading lots of the threads on this forum I now have a big bad case of "container mania". So yesterday I decided to check out a few of the local haggle shops and antique stores that are all in a row downtown. I only made it through 2 before I almost dropped from exhaustion and sensory overload lol. These places are amazing - they used to be big stores that sold out and moved away and are now occupied by these haggle shops. They are almost like magic expanding universes! They go on forever and have lots of odd twists and turns. I had never visited any of these before and was enchanted.

Anyway, I did come home with 3 different containers. Most of the stuff in these stores was not cheap - these people know their antiques and I was looking for junque (hoity toity junk lol). But I did find this big wooden box (27" long, 15" wide and 13" deep) that I thought I could put a couple of clematis or hosta or something in. It has a stamp on the side that says Standard Railway Container. My question is, would you treat the inside with something or line it with something? I am figuring it won't last very long but it was so cheap I decided to get it.

The ceramic container is new and not an antique but I have been searching for something to try growing lotus in (thanks to one of these threads :-) and I thought this would be perfect. It was also not very either compared to all the old stoneware. And last but not least was the bark pocket which I thought would be great with sedum in it.

I would line the boxes with some heavy duty plastic, Great finds. Would Lily happen to be "The Black Bear Lily" If so I'm a major fan, totally addicted LOL

Hi Christine - My name comes from the fact that my first gardening obsession was daylilies. After 6 years of nothing but daylilies I am now branching out.

I had to look up Lily the Black Bear on the internet and I can see why you are such a big fan! I may have to start tuning in. On a similar note, we have a wolf preserve in our town on top of a mountain in a nature preserve. I am a huge fan of that. They even have wolf howlings you can go to at night.

Thanks for the black plastic advice. I will have to try that.

That's what I'd use as well. Or I'd just use it to hide less suitable containers.

Susan,is there a web cam for the wolfs? I would love that.

Hi Christine - Yes there is a wolfcam. Right now it isn't working due to the damage from all the trees falling during the heavy snows we had this winter. In fact two large pine trees fell on each side of the enclosure flattening the fence and ALL the wolves escaped! Most of them were lured back in right away as they are all pretty used to their human handlers. But there were a few who stayed out in the park near the enclosure for almost 60 days. The park was closed all that time! They finally got all but one of them back. The last one has never been seen since the trees fell so unfortunately they are thinking that one isn't alive anymore.

Here is the wolfcam site for when the camera gets fixed:

And here is a link to a newpaper article about the wolves escaping:

And here is a link to a youtube video that shows the cubs that were introduced to the pack a few years ago. You can see the volunteers are in the pen with the pack. The enclosure is a lot bigger than it appears on the video. There is also some video on youtube of a "wolf howling" (the whole pack howls in answer to one of the trainers calling ) that is pretty interesting

After posting all these links I now want to go up and visit the wolves again!
