Easter Egger Hatch

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

I bought a dozen EE eggs from a lady who lives nearby (about 8 miles away). They were mostly light blue-green.

I see pics are not working again. I'll wait awhile before I post the rest. But - out of 12 eggs, 1 hatched Thursday night, 3 overnight and 4 friday morning. Total of 8. I thought that would be it, but left the 4 eggs in the bator. One hatched about an hour ago. It looks more frail than the others at hatching, so I am watching it carefully.

OK... here are the eggs just before lockdown.

The first two out of the bator into the brooder. The yellow one is the only light colored one to hatch.

Thanks Catsy.

Here's a closeup of #1.

Here the 8 are today. I need to get individual pics sometime soon. You can already see the cheek tufts on most of them. And their patterns as so pretty.

Darn I wish they'd get this picture thing fixed already. I am going to keep 3 or 4 pullets (if I get that many) from this bunch. Picture of the parents can be found here. http://www.backyardchickens.com/web/viewblog.php?id=33447

I think my next hatch will be of her cuckoo marans, but I'll have to enlarge the coop (or get a 2nd one) for them. Chicken addiction LOL.

Congratulations Beclu: The easter eggers are darling as babies, and also very pretty as adults, I have always liked them and their colored eggs...The pic thing gets frustrated but the pic's are great, and cuckoo marans of which I have had for years. I love em and a great choice. Enjoy, Haystack...

On another note... It snowed here yesterday and my poor girls aren't used to this. Here's their coop and run.

Here is #9 in the bator. Another black one.

Put him in with the others when I cleaned the brooder. He can hold his own and started eating and drinking right away.

The other black one, #8. No other names yet, waiting for them to show more personality.

Congratulations! They are very cute!

Can you guess from their current colors what they will look like as mature chickens? I was given Ameraucana chicks for Christmas and was quite surprised how they changed as the new feathers grew in. For example the chick we all called "the black one" is now nearly all red and lighter colored than the "chipmunk" colored ones.

Anyone good at chick colors?

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

I have no idea what they will look like as adult birds. I just look at the parents pics on BYC and like all of them. I hope the yellow one is white, but it could be red or anything I guess. My yellow as a chick Wyandotte is white with red splashes on her back and grey/white pencilled feathers on her neck. Her yellow brother turned out to be mainly red. Their colors are already changing. My granddaughter has been picking them up and talking to them all day, so they are getting used to being handled.

Congrats

That is interesting, porkpal...because I noticed the same thing about EEs/Americaunas.

I had one in particular....a huge, plush, partridge-coloured chick, Plum. Everything about his down suggested he would have darker pigment, but when his feathers came in he was mostly white.

I am guessing that lil black #8 is a roo. I have no idea why.. and could sooo be wrong.. but just got that impression.

As far as color, if they are EE's you are in for a fun ride. They can be anything and it's sooo fun to see how they mature!

Congrats on your hatch.. it's awesome!

Go ahead and give #8 a boy name, ZZ is usually right ! I'm still having trouble fitting my little pullets into the color categories available for Ameraucanas. My one white Ameraucana chick did turn out white, but a yellow one also turned out nearly white (you can only see the difference if they are side by side.) I guess it would be called wheaten? A couple with bluish tendencies are still blue in parts - silvers(?), but the ones we were calling light chipmunks and dark chipmunks all morphed into various shades of red and black (brown-red?) - not necessarily retaining their lighter of darker characteristics. So some of the names we gave them are no longer descriptive. "Blue Bomber" is okay but "Misty" is mostly brown...

I'm really rusty since I've been out of touch, but thank you for the vote of confidence! :)

I'm sure it's like riding a bicycle - you never forget.

Lodi, CA(Zone 9b)

LOL I'd like to see wing pics of them when they are like 4 days old.. then I can guess!!

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

ZZ & Porkpal. I think you are right about #8.

I'll try to get individual pics tomorrow. They are growing so fast. All have at least some wing feathers at day 3. Amazing.

Thanks MissJestr. I am really enjoying them. Chick TV all the time.

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

Yesterday, I moved them into a bigger brooder - an old aquarium. It doubled the floor space. Here they are in the new setup.

Can't wait for the guessing game pics!!! Get em before it's too late! LOL They sure are darling..

Chick envy! Congratulations, that's a beautiful bunch of chicks, can't wait until the guessing begins!

My granddaughter will be here tomorrow to help me get pics. They sure are fast for week olds. Everyone here seems to think they are mostly roos. Argh!

Kingman, AZ(Zone 7a)

Question here, why are there rocks in the water? to keep it from tipping??

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

Rocks are to keep the chicks from drowning if they fall asleep in the water. (You'd be amazed how fast they fall asleep and where...) Some people use marbles. I just used my granddaughters rock collection. They are big enough now that the rocks aren't needed, so I cleaned them up and put them back in her "treasure chest." LOL.

Dacula, GA(Zone 7b)

Well we attempted to photo them. I have pics of 8 of them and can't tell which I missed. (May have 2 pics of one anyway, they look so much alike, lol.)
