When to stake?

Tulsa, OK

I need advise. This is my first year actually starting MG from seed (Morning Glory Minibar Rose) it's about 6-8 inches tall. My question - when do they typically need staking? It's fallen over (not damp off) but is otherwise healthy. I've had other MG grow wild in my back yard so never observed how it looks as a 'baby'. I wonder if it's too leggy?

Hi,can you send a picture? The Minibar is a climber and needs a small support structure. Do you see little curly twiners on the plant? It is fine to put the support in there at planting time or at least within 2 weeks of planting.

Additional information: Some morning glories like the dwarf Sunsmiles have a trailing habit and will grow downward and those kind do well in hanging baskets or shelf planters.

I'll take a picture and will post this afternoon when I get back to my home computer. Thanks for the advise - no it doesn't have the little twiners yet it only has one set of leaves

Minibar Rose is a nice vine for a basket or for letting grow up a small bamboo cane support. It grew slowly as I recall. The flowers are a nice red with white tube and narrow white margin. The best part of growing this strain is the intensely variegated leaves it displays. Have fun with it!

It is a bit leggy. They need more sunlight. Otherwise they look healthy. Karen

Joseph and gardener2005 thanks so much for the advise. I guess I should have moved the light closer to it when it emerged - will know for the next time though. I'm SOOO excited!

ultimateshopper - I grew one in a basket too and it did rather nicely. It's not a huge vine like some. It did twine/climb up the chain on the basket, but that was fine. Never over-grew the pot and bloomed like crazy with Bloom Booster fertilizer, regular watering, and full sun. :-)
