Some color is starting to show up in the garden - at least for us who are not snowed in. Here's the place to post your February garden photos. My first abutilon bloom.
February 2010 in the garden
Still....
no...just yesterday's flurries and todays crunchy frost
Oooohhhh...OK.
Well I see DG still has it BVD's in a bunch. Can't enlarge your pix so I can't tell what the heck that is.
What is going on with DG? I can't even work on my journels for all the blasted rec x's.
They are just some dafs.. and no, that is the size of that pix.. the dang camera at the time was giving me the snits and fritz...
About the only issue Im havig is red x's on DG.. HEY DAVE, what gives?
BB - Dave is no longer an Admin here and has no admin rights for the functions of this site. He has gone on to other things, sorry, but your request has fallen on deaf ears, or at least just fallen on mine.
Nice spring photos to cheer me in all this snow, thanks, Dianne you are on your way to arrangements galore!
Well, ok, HEY NEW ADMINS.. WHAT GIVES!?!?!?
Well, I do hope your seeing the end of winter soon. Its time has come.
Afraid we got a long way to go here BB. It will be April before all of this melts and the almanac is calling for even more between now and then. This is the first day I have been to work since 2/4/10 - Everything has been closed including the roads.
Well, we know of someone else out that way too. Said he would have to hike home three miles if he could even get to the nearest town he lived in to be even that close to home. The country roads are a mess. HOpe your power stays on and you got all the provisions you need to make it to when you thaw!
OMG if we had any more provisions, I'd weigh a ton. I spent last week making cherry pies, roast turkey, homemade bread, chili, spaghetti, sweet rolls, man oh man!
Our SIL had to hike 5 miles in the snow last weekend, they live on the eastern shore and almost never get snow and they got a couple feet, They don't have but about 2 plows in their county and nobody has 4-wheel drive, he got stuck at 3 in the afternoon and didn't get home walking until 8:30 that evening and he did walk in a blizzard and snow drifts waist deep and all he had on was his uniform, no boots, no gloves no hat and just a lightweight jacket. What a great story he can tell his children about the time he hike home from work in all that snow!
Yano, I really dont care much for your version of winter atall! LOL!
If I gotta start hiking in eyeball deep white stuff, just shoot me. Its not gonna happen.
I remember back in 67.. (OMG! eons ago.. eyeball deep snow, but really the snow was to the eave of the house and tunnelling was the mode of getting through it!)
Right now here we got 1-4 inches of blowing snow. Its sunny, not to terrible cold, but wait a moment, it could change.
OooOOh that is sooooo lovely dalfyre! Keep them coming!
I saw two robins the other day so spring has arrived onthe wing of the birds but we willhave snow off and on for a few weeks yet.
Well, got up this am expecting to see that nasty white stuff on the ground but it either missed us or hasn't arrived yet. Their even yammering about possibilities of winter pricip for next Mon. and Tues. Somebody go find that stinking groundhog boot him into next year.
Thats cuz I GOT THE WHITE STUFF.. I will box it up and send you some.
Nu-Nu-Neeeeeeuuuuuuu!
Running to the PO right .. well sort of now.. soon anyway!
well...go already....LOL
Whoooooosh! LOL!
Lovely!!
Jon - your delphiniums are really early bloomers. When did you put them into the ground? Or are they perennials for you?
They're strictly a winter annual down here. They're a short (12") chinese delphinium that are more heat tolerant, so they usually bloom until early July for me. You can plant seeds beginning in October for late winter/early spring blooms. They're mixed in with some "Imperial Giant" Larkspur flowers that were started from seed in November.
I never remember to seed in the fall - thanks for the reminder. I'll have to try that next year. I would be thrilled if I can get blooms like yours.
Dianne
Larkspur seeds are "smart" here. Most flower seeds will germinate right after you plant them, regardless as to whether its the right time to sew them. I planted my larkspur seeds last year in late September and it was apparently still too early/hot. I left them alone and then they surprised me and germinated in November when it was cooler. I've made many mistakes at sewing seeds at the wrong time of the year down here. This was the first time I observed a seed that just simply waited until the weather was just right. I planted some more of the same larkspur seeds in November and they immediately germinated. Anyway, it seemed kind of interesting to me.
I'm hoping to get the delphiniums:d.nudicaule"Fox",d.cardinalis,d.zalil and "Kissed by Chocolate" to survive long enough to bloom and produce more seeds and this year I'll start them in the fall instead of winter.
LOvely, great to see the gardens springin up! Will be a while here.
Like your choices Patty. Had to look them all up and you picked some nice unique colored ones in yellow, orange and chocolate brown/white. Would love to grow the tall Delphinium but it isn't gonna happen in my climate.
May not for me either but ya never know until you try. I figure the humidity is going to be the big factor on survival.
I can see you giving them a try in Zone 8. Living in Zone 10, I'll try things listed up to Zone 9, but rarely things listed as Zone 8 being the maximum. The only exceptions would be something that grows and blooms fairly quickly from seed. That might be something I could work with during the 6 cooler months.
Keep your fingers crossed for me then because everybody keeps telling me it ain't gonna happen...I try to make fibbers out of them when they say I can't....LOL
Sure, I take a hiatis for 6 days and delphiniums are popping up... nice going!
Yeah! Go delphiniums go! I hope they work out for you Patty. It's always nice to prove the doubters wrong and have a few success stories.
Germination on d.cardinalis and Kissed by Chocolate have been real spotty but hopefully I'll get enought to make a nice showing.
Well show us themoney when ya got a pix!
