THE GHOST OF GARDENS PAST

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

So sad to see all those burnt plants, but it sounds as if you are making lemonade out of the lemons life has handed you this winter. I think a lot of your plants will survive and be all the hardier for it. Fingers X'ed!

West Palm Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

LOL Brave thats what my hubs said about some of our plants if it doesnt kill em it will make em stronger! Errrrrrrr OK! ;o)

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

Both sad and happy that you're making the best of it. We only had to scrape frost off the windshield twice here so far, so maybe I won't have to start over this spring.

Hillsborough , NC(Zone 7a)

Oh gosh guys - I just heard on the news that we are the only State without snow today - unbelievable! I can't imagine how different some of your gardens are going to look, here's hoping for an early and glorious Spring for all of you.

Pasig City, Philippines

Hi, RJ!

I can just imagine how creatively designed your garden was before it was damaged. I especially like the Green face accessory. I echo what Braveheartsmom said; I wish you a glorious spring and am looking forward to seeing photos of your garden in its full glory again.

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

The news people said they had people scouring the volcanos there in Hawaii for snow hoping to have the rare 50 states with snow at once. lol

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

lol...Pepper!!!

thanks guys...the weather has been very clear, but still 15F below normal. Still .....spring will not be delayed, the cherry trees have already blossomed...pears are coming...followed by Magnolias.

Now..if I can just turn off the green house!

KC Metro area, MO(Zone 6a)

LOL Rj. You posted twice. You must really want the greenhouse to turn off!! LOL

Brazoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Looking at your heliconia......will it come back? I have (had) 2 in 3 gallon pots in my unheated hoop house. Lost all the tops off but don't kinow if I can expect them to come back. I have never grown them before and I just got them in November. Any suggestions? The only thing that I lost for sure was my papayas but I had some seeds from them. Trying to grow them out again. I had 3 large trees, 2 10 ft and one a little shorter. 2 of them were 3 yrs old but I know they do not last very long. I am fortunate that I had fruit as long as I did.

Hi Susie,
This was my first try with them. Got them from a DG friend in Florida. This type was suppose to be a bit more hardy, so it's a wait and see if they come back. I kind of doubt it...but I've never had such wide spread devastation before..soo...it's a wait and see. Mine were in the ground. I do have a couple of more tender type in the green house in pots that seem to be fine. I only aquired them late last year as well...so am new with them.

Brazoria, TX(Zone 9b)

Mine were from Florida also, got them from a nursery in Alvin that ships in from Florida. guess everything is a waiting game this year.
Susie

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

and a lengthy waiting game at that!

Jacksonville, FL(Zone 9a)

Randy, my plants look exactly like yours this year. I am fairly sure your Ti's and the blue ginger will come back from the roots. Mine have always come back when we had freaky freezes in the past and my largest blue ginger has been in a pot out in the cold wind, for years.

I too am seeing signs of spring but the NOAA says we will have another 4 weeks of unusually cold weather. Our soil is colder than it has ever been since I have beeen checking. We have also had the wettest winter on record so the soil is cold and soggy.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

cold and soggy is not happy for tropical!
I'm glad to hear that about the Blue gingers..they were at the pinnacle of gorgeous this last year.
You know what's weathered really well is bamboo. No wonder the Houston area has become a hot spot for bamboo forests lately.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Hi Rj.

What a mess we have. I have put off clearing too much out for things are creeping back after I thought that were gone. There is one little fern that I thought was toast, but there was 1/2" growth on in a couple of days ago. So, think that I will put off any more cleaning til I'm sure what is really going to come back. There are a number of things that I know are gone.

We'll have a wonderful spring....right?

Hap

BTW, they are predicting another freeze for us tonight and tomorrow. Spring????

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Are you serious about that freeze forecast for tonight? Will this winter ever end? That does it! I'm moving to Ecuador before I have to buy snow tires and snow shovels. I'm totally disgusted. Just when my desert rose is showing signs of life again.

Sylvain.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Looks like we have a bit to go. UGH!!!

Hap

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

We barely escaped freeze last night, and we'll be at 36F tonight. I think after tonight it is going to be acting more like spring.
I've cleared out all the woody vines already, dead. Not to say that something won't come from the roots. I'm leaving all rooted things in the ground.
I'm pretty sure I lost the jacaranda and delonix regia trees as the trunks are bleeding. You are right in the fact that many things are going to come back, but it will take them a while.
I've been working on cleaning the deck, power washing. Of course, when it's this cold, no projects with water involved for me! The worst part of this, is we all know we are going to go from Zero to summer in days and won't have time to work with colder weather plants this spring.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm still waiting to see signs of life on my plants. I fear that a lot of my vines are toast and I am going to be sick if my allamanda vines (purple & cherries jubilee are goners). They are some of my favorites. I just can't believe the winter we are having.

I had ice on my windshield this morning and had to use the water hose to thaw it. Not a pleasant way to start the day.

Patty

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

There is frost on the roofs this morning...glad I wrapped up Fern and her new frond. If this fern produces more spores this summer I'm going to propagate them. The baby one growing on the rock is doing well, and has formed a tiny fuzzy trunk. It appears that another spore in that rock has sprouted.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

We're headed for another freeze warning. Dern, enough is enough!

Hap

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

I hear ya Hap! I'm ready for spring.

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

No freeze here - we're just going to be building an ark soon.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

The good thing about an ark is that you only have to count to 2. LOL Sorry, Mary.

Hap

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Bad Happy! LOL

(Mary) Poway, CA(Zone 10a)

LOL

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

I'd like any Hawaiian friends to please read news asap upon awaking this morning..you have a Tsunami warning. Possibly produced by a huge earthquake in Chile.

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Hopefully everything will come back in time......

How did Wayne's garden do?

Jeanne

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

It's pretty fried too. He put up another green house...now when you go through the gate...it's green house from the gate clear back to the big green house. The gate green house is smaller than the large one..but it's all connected now

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

Sorry to hear that! I hope he was able to save some things with the two greenhouses. Our plastic did basically little for our plants the week of the freeze.

I don't plan on buying much until April!

Hope you had a nice weekend!

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

LOL, it will take us at least until then to clear out the old stuff anyway..I started on the front this weekend with a new pair of cutters, and almost cut the end of my pinky off ending that project quickly..had to get it stitched up..the good news is the new snippers work well!

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

Slicing a sandwich in half cost me 1/8 inch off my index. There was nothing left to stitch on. I chopped the end off cleanly. I bandaged it and kept on going as best as I could with 9 fingers only. Lunch was not going to fix itself because I had lost the tip of a finger. I enjoy working with sharp instruments, specially in the kitchen. Considering the amount of cooking I do, it's amazing that I still have all my fingers.

Take care, all. Randy, I hope that heals well for you.
Sylvain.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Geez, Guys. Is there something in the water? Watch yourselves!!

Hap

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

lol...I had just bought them and my friend Margaret and I were just blabing away...can't chew gum and........

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

I forgot to say that my mishap happened over 10 years ago but aside from that, my story's modus operandi is remarkably similar to Randy's story.

Sylvain.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Sylvain!!! I was just getting ready to call an ambulance....

Delray Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

As I was saying Sunday, there will no ambulance or thought of emergency room in this house unless someone is actually dying on the floor. Even when that accident happened, even though we had full medical insurance in Canada, there was no thought of an ambulance. Heck, I even drove myself to the hospital when I was suffering from an obstructed bowel caused by a hernia the size of a softball. I had to pull off to the side of the road a couple times on the way there because the pain was unbearable, but I made it there on my own. I'm not big on ambulances.

Thanks for thinking for ways of helping me. I appreciate it.
Sylvain.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh yeah...well I dragged myself in the house when my hip popped out after replacement surgery, then dragged myself to the couch and popped it back in like Rambo..OMG it's official...I'm talking about prosthetic s and medical conditions!!
LOL..how's that for pathetic! I was gardening with crutches and the bugger just popped out..I was like raggedy andy.

Portland, TX(Zone 9a)

OUCH!!!!! I do believe that is a sign of the times as in old age my friend! Mine is the knees that give out when I'm gardening and bending like I used to is a thing of the past. Now I have to have a gardening stool per doctors orders--no more bending.

Chicago, IL(Zone 5b)

Guys, it must be in the water. We are too young for this nonsense.....
