THE GHOST OF GARDENS PAST

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Whilst searching my photos for the Houston Chronicle of a before and after freeze photo of the tree fern for their monthly garden news letter, I came across all these lovely photos taken only 2 months and a week or two ago.

First here is the photo they are trying to upgrade...they merged before and after the freeze

Papaya-

Possible recover (second freeze for this one) which is why there are two tops to the tree that grew from the first recovery. I believe the top left will perish.

Black Currant Swirl datura "tree"

Will recover, and we all know the seed production. This Particular Datura is call Datura Tree, for it's ability to grow up to 10 or so feet tall. They become so heavy that they cannot support themselves and tend to lean and lay.

This combination of variegated and blue ginger was very beautiful. At least to me...I know I threw pictures of this around time and again.

It was a bit distressing picking and choosing what lived and not. The house, and green house was stuffed full of plants.

Very sad looking,
Randy good thing is that spring will be there soon!
About 3 months for me here, but your just around the corner from spring!
I hope the best for you, please keep us updated, especially as soon as you see the green returning,I know all to well about the brown feeling!!!!

I know, I feel bad about whining sometimes...but you know how tropical some of this is. The bright side is that I am getting a new roof, and the diminished vegetation is a good thing.
I just checked my large woody vines like the B. grandiflora and rubber vine...I think they bit the dust. The thick trunks are soft and rubbery. I'm not sure what to expect with vines!?

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

Yep vines are very iffy!!!!
But we can't help ourselves when we desire exotics!

so true!

Randy, such a shame that your garden had to suffer through this. I hope a lot of the plants come back of their own accord as soon as the sun starts shining again. Who knows what is lurking under the ground while the tops are wilted and gone. I wish you the best of luck with all that.

Take care.
Sylvain.

aah, thanks...It will thrive again!

West Palm Beach, FL(Zone 10a)

so sad to look at all this brown, but you could look at it this way you can watch in awe as some of your plants come back from this, and marvel at their resiliency! (sp)
I know its hard to look on the positive side right now, though.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

True, I'm starting operation spring clean tomorrow, and am cleaning out junk waste so I can prepare for some serious gardening. I'm actually excited about making changes!

Bushland, TX(Zone 6a)

I hear you,I started removing some evergreens that have outgrown there space, and a
new deck, and then the last snow storm stopped me!

Atenas, Costa Rica

Thanks for sharing all those pics!

Atenas, Costa Rica

I went to visit the sourthern part of Costa Rica. There is a Reserve that belongs to the Boruca native Costa Rican. So we had a Borucan Tour Guide! He knows alot about the jungle.
