Beautiful shot, Dave. Waxwings are such gorgeous birds.

Lovely photos everyone!

GP, Hopefully they will look for another tree near your property.

Dave, That is a gorgeous shot!

Dave... that is gorgeous!!!

Dave if there are berries & natural seeds to eat, the food will be ok. I would wonder about trees etc. coming down & losing their homes wouldn't you? I think a quick warming afterwards might help them as well. You are getting warmer in your area after all.

PERTH, Australia

Wonderful shot of the Waxwing, Dave.

GP, I'm so sorry about the tree. I hope your birds are able to find alternative accommodation.

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

Dave all our birds down here seem to know how to hide and survive when we got hit by snow and ice last week. Maybe yours will know what to do too? Fingers crossed for them. They aren't just pretty faces but oh so good for the environment.

Actually it is me asking about the Woodpeckers, folks, not Dave...but thanks for your responses. I learned this morning from my brother that a HUGE section of the tree broke and crashed down to the street yesterday, so the owner had no choice but to finally get rid of the ancient Oak. I'll get a picture of whats' left in a while. The men have left equipment, so I guess they will be taking it all the way down later today. One of the Woodpeckers was by for food this morning.

Maybe you can put up a woodpecker house somewhere on your property

Never thought of that...I know they prefer trees. Maybe they have a "second home" somewhere. Here is a pic I just took of what's left of the Oak.

Well it hasn't started to snow yet but the doppler radar shows it is very near. And it is VERY overcast. A day when the 200mm f/1.8 pays for itself.

Duc, I had one waxwing show up this morning and ir was much easier to capture his/her colors in the diminished light. The bright sunshine tends to blow their lighter colors. Here is one of the shots from today. Very little editing needed.

Beautiful shot of the cedar waxwing! I guess we will have mostly a rain event in central KY with this storm, but even a slight shift in temperature will change it to freezing rain, sleet, or snow. Had to make another batch of "suet" this morning as the birds are ravenous and I was down to the last cake.

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

It is raining pretty hard here right now. Other years it would be snow. Most of Jan. was much warmer than normal ,, and Feb. is starting the same, was 35 degrees this morning. I am beginning to worry about the fruit tree blooms, if the warm weather causes them to speed up bloom, they may get frozen.

GP, I'm so sorry to hear about the tree and I do hope the wps will find a good spot somewhere close. Although, if they leave what's left of it, you may still see them nest in the tree. Old snags are very popular.
Dave, that waxwing with your name is absolutely superb! Definitely tops my list of favorites. Well, now that I've seen the next one, they're both up there. You're right about that sun and the feathers-thanks for reminding me about that.

I hope everyone stays safe in that snow and ice!! We're just getting rain and thunder storms.

Found this Black Phoebe enjoying a break in the rain.

Sad to see that old oak go, but I can see why they did, it's full of decay and dead wood and a real danger to their home safety.

I'll be starting #283 in a moment, link to follow shortly. As usual, it's been a super set of pics here!
