Funny how similar my experience as a kid was, Ric, and that was in NYC!
There's a hilarious radio ad running for a bank where some corporate people use just about every dumb word and phrase we've been complaining about!
Words and Language - Part 2
I wish my grandkids could experience all the freedoms I did as a child. But then, I wish my grandkids could remember what stationary is used for!
I thought of another epxression today and am wondering about the derivation of it.
When someone is doing something to the full extreme and not holding back on anything, they "pull out all the stops"... as it were.
Might this have evolved from when someone is playing a pipe organ and pulls out all the stops on the registers to gain full impact of the organ's strength/power/volume etc ???
I remember watching the organist at church when I was a kid, and when she would pull out all the stops on the organ, the sound was phenomenol...then she'd push them back in at different intervals depending on (I assume) what the given piece called for.
Just curious if this is where the expression came from...
Chastity belts???
Yes, the new Chastity Bono will be needing a whole new selection of belts now...
hee hee
I suspect it would be related to the organ as you thought. Stops or a stop is the name for the vaious pipe controls on the organ and if you are building up to a full out volumn tht is exactly what you would do -pull them all out in a gradual manner. (ALthough there is a way to do it with a master contol)
I CAN NOT believe the prices they charge for pj's.
Much cheaper, and more fun, to wear nothing.
but colder
Blankets.
Fireplace!
Nookie!
in front of the fireplace?
ouch.. the needles!!
(Done that.)
Carpet burn...
Sounds like a great party....LOL
Hee hee. It's those loose ornament hooks you have to watch for!
Olympic time seems to be the only time you really hear the word 'venue' used much. 'Location' works the rest of the time. ^_^
Stay on top
...or when they refer to areas of a war as "The Pacific Theater" from WWll as an example. Hardly "entertaining" in the traditional sense of the word.
True, JD.
What about people's names? Isn't weird how some sound okay for adults, but you just can't imagine a baby with that name?!! Like Murray? Agnes?
or Gertrude...I had an aunt Gertrude who looked old when she was 5 !
Yes - that's certainly another!
I really believe some people are born old.
that's what I named the wild turkey who used to visit me.. Gerty!!!
I was just talking with someone and they said their son was considering naming their baby Agnes. I said "are they having an 80 yr old woman?"
LOL
Hee hee!
Two things to relate regarding retail people. I was once on the phone with a sales guy. Don't remember if it was for the job or personal. When I asked if he had something or could do something and the answer was no, he would say, 'I sure don't.' Every answer was either 'I sure do' or 'I sure don't.' It was bizarre!
When we were young there was a Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood that we frequented. One waiter would say 'Thank you, you're welcome.' We did our best to keep from busting out laughing!
that sure does sound bizarre
Hubby was in a Chinese restaurant and his brother ordered a soda, they said they didn't have any, looked over at the next table and they had some, "so where did they get that?" Oh not soda "coke" We have Coke Coke, orange Coke or Root Beer Coke
Funny, Jen.
My seven year old said there was only one 'Rit' left today!! Hee hee. He loves Ritz and was trying to be grammatically correct! Funny.
hee hee cute!!!
I just came across a phrase which seems to be commonly used nowadays that always somewhat irritates me: 'price point'
As per the Olympics...medal is now a verb.
Will ____ medal in the finals?
