Pet lovers - please advise me!!!

A small screen porch is being built right now for my cats!
I asked the builder to paint the wood white but he said that weathering would cause the paint to flake etc. and that we would not be able to repaint it because of the screening. So he tells me that the structure is made out of pre-treated pine. I have concerns over wood that has been pre-treated when it comes to the health of my pets. Because they will scratch the posts, as is their nature,
are they likely to be harmed in any way by chemicals i.e. when they are washing their paws?

Louisa, That is a good question...I am going to the vet's office at 10:30 this morning with a sick critter. I will ask her for you and post the answer. I would think it wouldn't hurt them, as my kitties scratch treated wood every chance they get! But I will ask the Dr....Lisa

Lisa - thank you so much. I hope your pet is OK - I just fall apart when mine are ill. My 3 cats came with me from England and 2 are brothers (14 years old) the other is a stray I took in - they are so adorable. One of the brothers, Brandy, has bleeding behind his eye and is under investigation. He sees the opthalmist this week. I am very concerned!

Louisa, here is the scoop: The vet said the kitties would have to do some chewing for the chemicals to hurt them. She also said that cats usually find one spot they really like to scratch at. So with that in mind she said that if you made a post and wrapped it in a piece of carpet they would scratch that instead. She also added that they love carpet posts, if you take one piece and fashon some carpet around it, they would like it. Spray also with some catnip spray for a little extra encouragement. I have 15 cats, yep, 15. All have a story behind them, strays and all fixed. 4 cats are house cats, the rest live outside. It took me many years of collecting to get to this number! LOL! All fat and happy. The critter that had to go in today was a parrot. He is fine. His leg got hung up on something in his cage during the night and it was bleeding. They fixed him up. Never a dull moment here....Lisa

Gee Lisa - Thanks again for the info. The cats do have carpet scratch posts but what a good idea to wrap their 'most used' post on the screen with carpet. Can't imagine what I would do with 15 cats - worry myself silly I would imagine. So glad your parrot is OK.
