Virginia Eagles are back
Cool!
Great news!
I love nest-cams!
WEST Virginia? Sure looks like the Norfolk area to me. If so, that's about as far as you can get from West Virginia and still be in the Old Dominion.
Errrrr... Oops!
At 1:30 p.m EST, the nesting Bald Eagle at Blackwater is completely covered with snow. The mate switched places with her earlier this morning.

Thanks for the link VA_Wild_Rose I will be watching that this evening. :)
Very nice Documentry!
I saw that one VA, it's very good. I think it was on last year too. I love it!
The first egg hatched this afternoon!!
awwww.
Just caught a glimpse of one baby. Now two have hatched and a third is hatching.
Third one is hatched now!!
Feeding time...
Too bad these Eagles can't teach a parenting class for all the other Eagles out there, They are amazing parents.
Aww such a sweet scene!
Heck...they could a lot of Humans how to parent better IMO!
Those little ones are growing fast!
The eaglets at Blackwater have grown enormously!
Check them out.... http://www.friendsofblackwater.org/camhtm2.html
The West Virginia cam had alot of bad luck in february with the back-to-back blizzards. The young pair abandoned their nest when it got really bad, and they lost their clutch of eggs. However, they came back and tried again, and they laid another egg! And it just hatched yesterday! Another tip of the hat to determination! Yay!!!
See them here... http://outdoorchannel.com/Conservation/EagleCam.aspx
Has anyone seen these Eaglets ever squabbling or fighting like some other sites from the past few years? Sometimes it is terrible to watch. These seem to be so content.....I guess because of the parents making sure they all get fed. Remember the one from Washington state where the larger female kept beating up on the smaller male? But the male was the first to joyfully take flight! (Maybe to get away from his sister?).
I haven't really seen any squabbling with these. No but I did see mom & dad have a little spat one evening at the last meal for the day. He was not giving her food fast enough and dared to eat some himself. She ended up taking the whole thing away from him! She ate and fed the eaglets. When she got done she went to the other side of the nest and he edged over and grabbed what was left of the fish...it was funny to watch! LOL The smallest seems to just wait knowing it will get feed. This male is a very good provider for his family.
That's good news!
I read an article somewhere on the net in the past few weeks about that. What it said is that if the eggs hatch with a few days lag time between them (as many do) then the larger eaglet almost always fights the smaller one for "first dibs"... and the size differnce increases... sometimes to the point that the smaller one dies out altogether. I know that with the Blackwater eagles in particular, the eaglets hatched within one day of each other, so they have been on equal ground from the start.
Big news…
Eaglets are scheduled to be banded next Wednesday, March 31 at 9:00 a.m. EDT. Follow the events in person at Norfolk Botanical Garden, or online on Eagle Cam.
Which is this Wednesday now...day after tomorrow!
I can't believe it is that time already
They are doing it a bit earlier then they have in the past. They have to cordinate it when all the people are available but their expert said the eaglets legs are big enough for the bands now. I think it said last year they were 32 days old when they banded them and this year they will be 20 days old.
oh! well that makes sense. I was thinking it was much later
Hope they get the camera working for tomorrow. :(
Yes that would be great.
It just maybe me but I feel that there is something odd. I mean with them doing the banding so early. They couldn't sex the eaglets or attach the transmitter so they will do that later. I know they said it was do to cordinating people But I am not buying that. And they have never do it so fast as they did today.....
It was nice to see the whole action this year with the camera being operable.
Guess they'll have to do it again anyway…
Your suspicions turned out to be well founded, nanny. I saw one of the eaglets playing with a loose band about half an hour after they had been returned to the nest. Still, it was fascinating to be able to see this remarkable event live.
The nest is actually getting crowded, with those chicks growing so fast. Margaret, did they ever mention one of the Eaglets losing the band?
The live camera never came on for me and I waited a LONG time! Is this the same for everyone else?
Yes, they did, GP. Shortly after I saw it playing with the band they became aware of it. They then explained that the smallest chick hadn't been banded at all. I don't know what the plans are now; whether they plan to re-band the middle-sized chick and band the smallest one.
They sure seem to be having a lot of issues this year....
I haven't tried it yet today, but several times the camera has not been working.
I've been watching on and off from the crack of (your) dawn and it's been working fine
