I haven't tried them but seeing as they are a hardy perennials,I don't see why they wouldn't be ok.
I've heard that they are difficult by seed and the preferred method is division. However, I know that some seeds are for sale, so someone must be starting from seed.

I grow tiarella wherryi from seed with no problems...in fact in the greenhouse they're a bit of a pest if I don't get around to dead heading,they wind up every where. Just don't cover them when you sow them. Put a layer of vermucilite onto top of your seeds starting mix and sow them on top of that.
