well didn't actually lose all of them at once. i finally got everyone to leave me alone today & went down to pull the rotten eggs out from under Miss mouth.. she'd taken back all those icky cold eggs that were left out for hours. I grabbed a handful of eggs & something chirped & it was cold & damp on my fingers. started grabbing at eggs, rolling them & checking them, leaned forward on one knee to get in the box better & crunch! there was a half hatched egg below my knee but no chick in sight. then i saw a little leg.. seems someone ate the baby. I thought.. no i'm just hearing things.. so i stuffed my hand back in & grabbed at eggs again & chirp chirp chirp.. considering i was rolling them i guess something wasn't liking that. one lone 90% hatched cold chick was sitting there amid the eggs. I grabbed him & ran for the house. threw him at mom with a fleece blanket & told her to hold him. Ran back for the other eggs just to check real quick.. all rotten. mother no where in sight.. came around the corner of the garage & there was Cotton candy my Cochin roo.. bloody from his head to his toes (he's white). i grabbed him ran for the house. mom was caring for the baby & I gave CC a bath.. lets just say.. never again! i had blood in my mouth, eyes up my nose... ewww. Then mom started yelling for me. Seems the baby died. he lived 1 hour. beautiful black EE roo i believe. I inspected him for harm & saw none but you could see the three little rows of the comb. Beautiful baby boy. I'm just sick. completely totally sick. CC is ok, in garage in a cage to dry off what blood I didn't get stopped running from his comb. but my baby died. :(

I am so sorry greykyttyn.

I had a similar tragedy....I put five fertile Serama eggs under a very broody Serama that was not with a roo. She sat on those eggs like a trooper. Then my uppity Penedesenca/Nankin cross decided to lay her eggs in the same box. Pushed the Serama out of the way to do it and then, after a week of that, decided she would like to brood too. So they sat there together...but not very happily. Just a few days before the eggs were due to hatch, something knocked the dog crate they were in over during the night. One egg was cracked, yet the Serama was still trying to brood them. But the Penedesenca cross noticed that there was food in the egg....she broke them all open and killed the chicks. The poor Serama is still trying to sit on the fragments and the Penedesenca has decided to brood them too.

Horrible creature.

i've never lost a baby before.. full grown ones & half grown ones nearly kill me.. but this.. this is awful. Mom thinks she cooked him by accident. The neighbor who has chickens told us to put the heat lamp 250 watt about a foot from the chick.. he was fine till we lowered teh lamp & she said he started running back & forth trying to get away but she didn't want to bother me since i was giving the roo a quick bath. She feels awful too bc she was the one that pushed the issue of the 250 watt bulb. He was great till that. Strong, drinking, eating. chirping really loudly. He had odd feathers tho. they were wiry & stiff in places.. very odd. My broody silkie is not doing well.. she suddenly just.. became kinda sick acting so I pulled the eggs she was on starting Wed or so & brought her back to the house. If she pulls out of it I'll give her eggs back to start a clutch with next week.

this makes me want to go to the feed store & get a chick just to hold. :(

I am so sorry. It's so hard losing a living creature no matter what size. Sending big hugs your way. :(
