Vitex tree cut down?

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Betty, thanks for that link. I already see I'm going to have to make an order. I want one of the silver bells too. Now, just to find room for these new things that I "just have to have" :)

Betty, another question! I want divide that tree in two parts, can that be done?

If i'm interpreting your question correctly, you want to split the tree in half. Is that right? If you had just planted a double branched vitex and each branch had a good sized root system, then you could safely split the tree in half. If I remember correctly, you said the trunk was huge. You would be putting a trunk with a huge wound in the ground. You could lose both pieces.

You said in an earlier post that you wanted to transplant it to another location. When you do that, you will have to prune some branches off to compensate for the root loss. Why don't you try rooting those cuttings. The younger wood would root more easily. Last year's growth would be best.

City_Sylvia, I had a good sized one that was too close to the house so I dug it up. My neighbor wanted it, but wasn't around when I dug it. It sat out in the dry heat several days before she got it and replanted. It survived without any problem, so I don't think your's will suffer being relocated. They are pretty easy to root. Do as Betty said, and if you have any, dip the cut end in rooting hormone before sticking in the ground.

My reason for wanting to split it in half is that I live in a Duplex. My neighbor is an invalid, so I do both yards trying to keep synergy or balance in the yard. I dont want my side laden with plants and hers have nothing. I get so much pleasure out of her excitement when she see something growing out front. So I wanted to move half on her side and half on mine. I will try to root some cuttings, but let me tell you guys, I am not very good at it. I have a tendency to forget them. :(
