I don't know how you all got your seeds inventoried already. My hands are cramped & I'm still not done. Of course, I am entering 9 or 10 months of trading... Guess I should have been doing it all along!
I did get some more seeds winter sown & have a flat ready to sow indoors (I think) haven't made up my mind yet if I am planting that one in or out. I only have room for one flat in my house.
ants
Seed Swap & Chat #51 .... Let the sowing begin...
Oh Ants. I feel for ya . Only room for one flat. Which oen ya thinking of doing inside? That would be pur e torture for me. I'd be figuring ways to hand from ceiling if ned be. LOL
LOL Star :) I have CATS... Lots of them! So, I have to keep all of my plants locked away in 'MY' room. I tried like crazy to get a greenhouse last year. If I didn't have cats I would do like trinawitch & have plants potted EVERYWHERE until I got a greenhouse :)
When listing seeds on your tradelist. If you purchase seeds like say in December for use the next year, do you list those seeds as 2009 or 2010?
ants
ants, i would put, purchased in Dec. 2009.
if they were trade seeds, i would just put the year, sometimes I'll add the harvest month if i know it.
Too many words for me tcs :P
ants
LOL... OK.. how's 12/2009 *wink*
but back to your original question... how ever you date the seeds is OK.
I've never had a person trading ask me how old/fresh the seeds were.
I put 2009. Cuz even if I purchase d them in December, they were packaged sometime hopefully durign that year.
Ok, downloade d a coupel of pics, here the jungle soil I was talkign about that I us e from Lowe's. Since they cut back on there one jungle soil brand I used and left price the same, I trie d this type of their brand.
It in the I call turquise bag with big flower s and veggie s all ove r it. Caleld Junfle Soil for Flowers and Veggies Professional grower Mix and it has ferts in it . Get 2 cubic feet for 6.97
her e it in my potting barrel
I do put when I harvested, month too when I remember. That is for me also, so I am reminded when to check for seeds :) Just didn't know how to do my extras of purchased seeds. I did put 2009 on the ones I purchased in 2009 & am glad I don't have to go back through all of that to change everything. Still working on getting all of my seeds put in a spread sheet & am now wondering how on earth I am going to get them all planted! :)

Lebug.. I went out to the back and looked. Don't have any shallow 606 they all the deep ones. Can send ya soem of them, or like say have some 2' x 2" single pots.
What siz e biger pots ya lookign for?
Have abunch of these, if you or somebody else wants for postage. They 6" and think some either 8 or 10 " pots. They were green at one time, but ove r the years the sun ha turne d soem of them with the rims all whiteish grey. few have cracks, by top edge but most don't. I us e em anyways. If somebody don't like buying plant with pot havign differnt colore d rim, oh well, too bad.
Don't knwo how many I cna get into a box, but if you or anybody els e interested wil go otu and see. Had flip flops on and wild blackberry bushe s are all up out there, and so wasn't gonan try and mess with them if nobody interested.
LOL Star! Looks like about how many I need :) JK :) I am using styrofoam cups this year with sandwich baggies on them, rubberband around that. Poke some holes in the baggies (poke holes in bottom of cups too) & set them out in the cold :)
Doing one flat like that inside with cinnamon sprinkled on them because I've always had the dampening off problem when starting indoors.

Ella -- that is how my Miracle Gro looks.
LeBug - received the Fruit Smoothies today - thanks so much for sending them !
Thanks Ella I took my Rex begonias and set them on top of the lights :) It’s a good thing that you told me that too maybe they will dry out some I’m getting that white mold on them and they are too damp to spray with H202.
Robyn, hate to hear what that doggie did it’s a wonder it hasn’t happened with my jugs will have to knock on wood now lol We have so many big dogs running around here I don’t even like tying my dog out anymore not because of them, Max will play with them for a few minutes then he will turn around and want to fight them! But your jugs, I play with Max all the time with milk jugs and never though about him taking my jugs off the back porch to play with that’s right where I tie him out at! I’ll have to watch him more closely!
Did you figure out what seeds you might need Robyn? If you are short some maybe some of us can help?
We’re due some snow too hope there isn’t any ice with it up to 6-7” is enough!
Terese just sounds weird for me to think of Bloodflower as Scarlet I know they have that name though :) But I’m glad you got them and glad you are sharing them I knew it would be too many lol trying to empty that darn crisper! If I don’t get any out of mine planted this year I may ask you for some next year lol
OMG Ella you have the pots going on! Thanks but I don’t like the round pots I just gave a bunch of them away too for some reason oh I know because they take up more room than the square ones, yes I’m picky lol Thanks for looking for the six packs, I’ll probably plant some petunias in my deep ones I was going to sell some petunias at the Farmer’s Market but don’t think I will petunias are so cheap and you don’t make any money off of them what do you think? I sold petunias before when I had my set up here and had all kinds of them left ended up giving a bunch to the neighbors I had so many thought they would really sell good but you have to have so many to make enough money out of them not worth it to me! Plus then you have to keep up with the six packs just too much trouble for what you make! I’m going for annual geraniums and what ever else I come up with that I can sell in three inch pots and up. I don’t really need any other pots but thanks! Do you need any plug inserts? I’ve got the ones that are about 2” across at the top I’ll measure them for sure if you need any.
Lynn, don’t worry about those six packs you will need them I do have some deep celled ones somewhere just need to find them :) I keep forgetting I have those! I bet they are in that black hole in the garage that keeps hiding everything from me out there! I have got to clean that garage out this year for sure!!!
Great Cris enjoy!
LeBug, I bought you some 6 packs yesterday, but now I need to find an economical way to mail them to you.
Oh Lynn I'm dmailing you! :)
tcs, I guess I've never traded seeds with you. I'm always asking the dates of the seeds. lol Or at least ask they have a date on them. I usually don't care as long as it's been within 3 years.
Star, wow, that's a lot of pots! I still do have some round pots, but I toss a couple each year for the same reason as Lebug, they take up more room than the square.
Ants, were you the one who sent me the Sweet Annie? I couldn't find any infor on when to plant it, so it is planted and germinated. When doyou start yours ... probably should have asked that before I planted. :o/
Lebug..... If yoru begononias in a baggy take them out to let them dry. try if you can very gently to try and grab some of the mold by a corner. It is filimentous and if nto gone to deep you may be able to pull some of it off. Since the seed re so tiny you may pull up the seed too with it nd not know, but if you have fungal mold growing on top it already has infecte d that seed. Even if you us e H202 it not gonan kill the fungus that has already penetrate d inside the seed coat, but you cna try and stop it from infecting the rest of the seeds.
If ya not sur e you cna lift it with yoru fingers gently , get a pair of tweezers to do it. grba and pick straight up and have tissue to put it in soon as ya lift it so ya dont send mroe spore s floatign around.
Petunia s wil do good in early spring and in the fall down here. Found they sell bette r in them round 6" pots if they have like 3 plants in them and spread around to looking full. I doing one flat of them for this year I got the new peetunias seds from sumemrhill this year to giv e a try got oen package of each. Am puttign two plants per cell . Petunias do better if you have them in ful pots or do up in hanging baskets. Think petunias are on the decline becaus e of the Callibrachoa. They bloom constantly and hold up better to the weather.
Ah the smell of Bleach! Good morning! Gonna get some planting done today... yippee. Now I just have to figure out how late I am... oops, looks like I'm down to 11 wks before frost... that should get me a bunch to start right away! It's almost better to start late than early. I know one year I was all ready... and nothing to plant drove me crazy. Ended up planting some things way before I should have :)
Went to a Garden Club meeting last night where the speaker talked about Butterfly and Bird Gardening. Perfect timing, as I'm really concentrating on that this year! One plant I'm curious about, Cassia. Anyone every grown it? Any opinions? I have a few seeds from a local garden that my daughter got for me, so I've never even seen the plant in person.
The sign is right to plant above ground crops and to transplant. Get growing and sowing,
Got a few MG seed up. Yippee!!!
Kl.. It is pretty. Not a big plant and dotn remmebr hwo logn th ebloosm last , btu definately need s shade for our area. It doesn't liek the heat and humidity or ful sun. Burns up real quick I found out the hard way.
LOl. I been sterilizing soem pot s this mornign too, getting ready to transplant finalyl thes e Twinny Peach Snaps.
Anybody need any Heavenly Blue Mg's. Visite d a friend and they gae me a half pound bag of the seeds. Going bezerk tryign to think of what coudl be done with them, btu have plenty if somebody wants some.
I know this may sound horribly lazy, but i sterilize my pots in the dishwasher....rinse them with the hose outside, bring them in, load into dishwasher and set on the china setting....I add a 1/2 cup of bleach to the wash cycle and let them go. Use the cool dry setting and viola'....clean sterilized pots with much less water waste and it saves time.
Hey!!! It works...sounds good to me.
For anyone who got Calendula seeds from me-
Seed germ is in 4 days! My daughter is doing a science fair project with them and we got germination in 4 days in two different mediums. Good germination rate too (I won't know exact % until at least 10 days though)
So just direct sow these in spring, no need to WS these.
Yes Ella I have a friend of mine that quit growing petunias because the rain tore them up all the time never thought about the million bells. I got some new petunias from SH too :) I want to see that denim one for sure! Got some more deep red ones too hope they are like the ones I had seeds to last year or better but with people talking about how the seeds from last year were getting to be faded out I’m thinking I needed some different seeds. I got: Petunia Valentine and Petunia Shock Wave Denim have you ever grown the Crossandra ‘Flame’ thought about planting some of those with my black EE’s with those orange flowers they should look good together. I’m going to grow that red salpiglossis for this year too and wanted some of the yellow but can’t find it.
It’s not even 20 degrees out yet today I’m about to talk myself out of going to town today but I’ve got so much I need to get done! The seven inches what they said earlier this week is turning into not much it’s all going below us the way it looks now I can handle that :)
I tried to get the white mold off of the begonias but it’s too thin yet I was pulling the dirt up instead will have to wait a bit I guess?
Lebug... Ye s you wil be pullign dirt up with the mold as that how it spreads. Dop't worry abotu brinign up soil with it. You want to get that soil cuz any fine filaments of the disease wil attach across that soil. If it real bad. i would dig out and ptich them sections. The longe r that mold stays the worse it gonan be . Te mold not attacking your soil so much a s it has already comprimised yoru seed and the plant.
I had gotten from Sh the red Vletine, the double white and the multicolore d new ones, Sophisicate and somethign else. I didn't get the denim.
That combo with back ee's soudns pretty but not sure hwo they would do togtehr. Never thought abotu that type of a combo before.
One of the thinsg with Petunais is the hotter your are a teps are the smaller blooms you want to grow. The smaller blooms hold up lot s better to weather adn the heat and wil bloom longer.
toofew, no, it was not me who sent the Sweet Annie. I tried growing some once, but never got it to grow.
I don't always ask how old seeds are, but I do try to make sure I am getting fresh seeds in trades. I mostly like to trade for fresh seeds from the gardens (or purchased seeds) of who I am trading with. I don't trade seeds that I have received in trade (unless I have recently got some of them to grow myself & then always let the trader know that is the case) & would rather not trade for seeds that the person I'm trading with has traded for. Don't know if that all came out right.
Star, I used to have an iguana many years ago & was living with my MIL & she found it staring at her one day in the laundry room. Was sitting right on top of the laundry detergent. Really gave her a scare! :)
I'm out of dirt & panicking :( Need to get my veggies started.

Lea, I did the Crossandra Yellow splash last year and I'm trying the flame this year. The foliage on them is absolutely gorgeous! I haven't found the perfect spot for them yet, but I'm determined to they're so pretty. Went out to clean up the other day, and was surprised to find a few seeds on they remains of the yellow. I'd been looking all fall and never found a one! Well will be interesting to see if they're viable! Trying that Salpiglossis from them too... looks amazing! Hee, and the denim petunia...
My Wallflowers are the first thing to pop up.
First time for Wallflowers.
We’ll have to trade what seeds of the petunias that we didn’t get this fall Ella, I don’t do many white petunias and the ones that were suppose to be the purple ruffle last year turned out to be white and was so pretty I decided to grow those again this year :)
This white mold is just a thin film all over the seed tray I may as well just give up on them then I hate that! Am I whining too much lol I’d really like to get at least one rex b. out of this mess :( I could plant another tray or two of them then if I put those on top of my lights with more air to them think that would give them a better chance? I’m getting the dreaded green mold in my lantana seed tray I just started seeing that yesterday, I’ve sterilized my dirt before I started planting what’s the deal! I always get this stupid mold I’ve thought about that with having so much dirt that I got the other day too next year will probably be worse having it so long in the garage and with the humidity this year I had a whole garbage can of it this summer get a huge thick mat of white mold on it, didn’t really matter then because I was using it to pot with or I don’t think it hurt once I put it in the pot and it got outside in the air I didn’t see it anymore.
I’ll have to check and see if they like the moisture like the EE’s do. The EE’s are the 'Illustris' I think that’s what the name of them are they have the green veins in them I got some of those light green grass seeds that’s shorter to put in with them and there was something else that I want to put in with them oh they had the lime sweet potato vine in there and they don’t like much moisture do they? A friend of mine sent me a picture of a combination pot with the EE’s, SPV, coleus and something else that I’m not sure what it is but it was beautiful! So I’m trying to make a beautiful pot out of my EE’s this summer :)
Klstuart, the Crossandra do like moisture so they should go good with my EE’s if they spread in the pot with them it will look really cool with them they aren’t a perennial for me though looks like they only go to z10 do you think they just reseeded for you maybe? The yellow sounds pretty too we’ll have to exchange seeds next Christmas if they take that long lol Almost as bad as the lisanthus!

Here’s my EE I’m growing it with:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/124712/
My leaves were darker almost black with the light green veins so pretty!
Here’s the millet I want to grow with them:
http://summerhillseeds.com/millium-aureum-new-for-2009-p-684.html
Does anyone think this might be too much for a pot there’ll be a lot going on in it I’m not good putting plants together just want something that pops this is going to be one of the pots on my front porch.
Rides, I have some orange wallflowers I had some old seed and sounded like on the package they might be a different color I WS mine and think they were the first to come up for me the last time I WS them I’m just hoping these come up they are so old. Mine outside the foliage is still green on them unless they just came back up and getting ready to bloom for the spring.
This picture is from DaleTheGardener on Neal's thread last summer for orange and yellow annuals for the shade:
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5919766
Aren't they beautiful! Neal are you growing any Crossandra for this year?
Lea.. If yoru gettign all that mold, on tings it too much water. Fungus molds love and thriv e on water.
Do you have any of the tiny 288 cell trays at all? If not, I wil pop ya a coupel in the mail and some sterile seed starter mix to get yoru begonias going. Will make ya aocupel fo tags too and sen dya a gallon baggy. When ya get , take the seed starting mix put it in the cels and just gently smear the mix all across the try, dont try pattign it down. take a mister bottle and mist each cell with two squirts of water only, no more than three squirts per cell. Then sow your seed. Put tray in baggy and clos e the sides but leave a little spot and bend down and blow yoru exhale air intot he baggy to blow it up and seal it kinda at same time. Then put som eplac e warm wher e it gets a little light and heat. Wil take as much as maybe two weeks for the seed s to sprout so evry so often open the bagy let old air out and blow ne w air in.
When ya say you sterilized yoru dirt, how did you do it and at what temps for how long.
Rides... Well congrats big tiem on yoru wallflowers!!!!!!! You gonan be a good flowr grower yet. : ) Wat els e ya got goign or are ya starting on.
OMG LEa, how can you say you aren't good at putting pots togethere????? The one you described above sounds and in my minds eye looks wonderful~~~~As to whether it will be too much for the pot, I guess it depends on how big the pot is. lol
I know the pots I put together last year were too blazaaaaaay or too many things that 'popped' at once. Yours has one that pops with wonderful background colors!
LeBug, sounds like you have a beautiful arrangement going on.
Not too much. It will be great!!!
They bit the dust. sniff sniff. Liek evrybody ther e soem things I cna grow and some I can't. I planted a tray of Gazania Day Break Pink Shades and they came up and was doing ok. Had em little seedlings. Then they starte d gettign their first true set of leaves and noticed that the leave s was turnign a pinkcolor. Now I figrued ok it says pink shade s in the name maybe the leave s turn colors too.
Well, the pink colore d leave s turne d to brown and they all croakeded. I have no ide a why? Anybody els e grown them or starte d them and had luck or symptons liek I described. Did them the same as I did the other Gazania I have and the other varietie s all gre w have been transplanted.
Tryign to see what went wrogn before I try soem mroe of them.
I know I wish I had talent to colro cordinate and do combos. Mayeb if I knew what looke d good I wouldn't have such a mountain of unuse d pots layign around LOL
Is it just my pter or has all the top headers goen bezerk and re d x's for al lthe pics and stuff?
Lea, that sounds gorgeous!
I grew the Yellow ones from seed from Summer Hills this summer, and purchased the other for this coming summer. No reseeding yet, though maybe the seeds I collected a few weeks ago will germinate. We'll see! From a start inside, they got to blooming fairly quickly for me last year, then seemed to slow down and picked back up at the end of summer/early fall. I had them in pots in partial shade. Should have brought them inside for winter, but I blew it on that one.
Ella -- I too have no graphics anywhere... just "x"
