Is this a brown widow spider?

Culver City, CA

Hi! I am in Los Angeles and have spotted a few of these around my home. Is this a brown widow? If so, is there anything I need to know regarding their potential bites? Anything I can do to help eliminate them?

Thank you!

It certainly looks like one. There appears to be lot of conflicting and potentially misleading information on this species on the internet - see http://tinyurl.com/nasgvy for a detailed report that appears reliable.

I am also in LA. I've got them all over my garden. I've read that their bites are no more harmful than your 'run-of-the-mill' spider bite. With that said, I have not been bitten by one, nor do I want to be. I typically let them live, and they don't seem to be much of a nuisance.

You are far braver than I. I let all spiders live except the widows and brown recluse.

Here in Indiana we have brown recluse and black widows, both are hazardous especially to children and those with weak immunity. We call the exterminator. They are both really hard to get rid of. You can go black widow hunting at night with a flashlight and a stick to smash the very large ones. Immature black widows can be striped. They love to hang out in the retaining wall around the pool. You can spot the webs, they are haphazard instead of well made.
